Gutters

To ask how often you clean your gutters? Household Maintenance manuals say once per year, my husband says it doesn't need to be done ever and he has ever heard or seen anyone having theirs cleaned. I'm not asking him to do it by the way, I just want to arrange to have it done.

I had new guttering 3 years ago and they badly need doing now, I'll get them done in spring. They get leaves and bits of God knows what in them so I suppose it depends on your area (trees overhanging) on how often they need dojng.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 06/01/2018 23:05

Yearly. Minimum.

Tippz · 06/01/2018 23:05

Gosh tricky one. I would go for once a year if you can. We do our ourselves. My cousin never had hers done in 5 years.., and it collapsed the other week with all the weight of the crap in it.

Is it an option to do it yourself? Do you have a ladder?

dorislessingscat · 06/01/2018 23:05

This might be the single most exciting thread on MN in the whole of 2018.

If you have overhanging trees that shed leaves onto your roofs/gutters then once a year is a good call. Otherwise they can be left for a good few years, maybe 5?

Generally they tell you that they need to be cleared when they overflow in heavy rain.

Tippz · 06/01/2018 23:07

my husband says it doesn't need to be done ever and he has ever heard or seen anyone having theirs cleaned.

He is talking shit by the way. Of course people need to have them cleaned out.

bridgetreilly · 06/01/2018 23:13

It depends a lot on how many trees are nearby dropping leaves into them. Mine are at head height, so I check them occasionally. 9 years in the house and they've never needed cleaning out.

idontlikealdi · 06/01/2018 23:17

My window cleaners do it. Twice a year maybe, more if needed.

rubberducker · 06/01/2018 23:44

As pp said, my window cleaners will do it while they're up there every now and again for a small additional fee. We had weeds growing in ours, there was so much rubbish in there, so definitely at least annually!

AnathemaPulsifer · 06/01/2018 23:47

Mine are done once a year and the guy gets 1/3 to 1/2 a wheely bin of moss and leaves out each time.

onlyonaTuesday · 06/01/2018 23:48

Once a year

GreenTulips · 06/01/2018 23:49

Check your insurance policy- it will say once a year and any damage caused buy over flowing gutters won't be covered - particularly if you have any form of valley guttering

Nicketynac · 07/01/2018 00:06

We have a very mossy roof so we need it done at least once a year Sad

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 07/01/2018 00:14

Window cleaners, once a year, for small, additional fee.
If you don't have window-cleaners - make sure to get a quote from tradesmen - before you commit. l got a VERY expensive quote prior learning my window- cleaners would do this job.

GreenTulips · 07/01/2018 00:15

Local tradesman did ours for £15

Cantspell2 · 07/01/2018 00:19

I do mine every spring and then at the end of summer I might give them another quick clean if I can see anything growing out of them. If you do it regularly it is not a big job so worth keeping on top of.

NeverUseThisName · 07/01/2018 00:47

Window cleaner does it every autumn. Costs about £30. Dh often has another go at it at some point in the year, if the gutters overflow. There are conifers near our house.

My brother OTOH lives in a city and has no trees anywhere near the house, so has it done every 5 or so years.

HelenaDove · 07/01/2018 00:50

Used to get ours cleaned regularly by the caretaker that worked for the HA that lived on site. He was made redundant back in 2011 Not been done since.

HuskyMcClusky · 07/01/2018 00:50

Your DH is nuts! Shock

They need doing at least once a year.

What does he actually think gutters are for? Ask him how they’re going to perform that function if they’re blocked with leaves?

boingbat · 07/01/2018 01:35

Your DH is nuts!

He is indeed! Off to show him this thread.

Think I was done like a kipper - cost me £90. It’s a substantial house - not a mansion with an east wing and west wing but substantial nonetheless....however it sounds like I shouldn’t have paid £90!

IrkThePurist · 07/01/2018 01:54

Your window cleaner can do them, and you can also get gutter guards to help keep the rubbish out.

verystressedmum · 07/01/2018 02:15

Once a year at least. Ours maybe need done more often as we live opposite loads of trees.
Once we’d left it a few years as never got round to getting the gutter man in and he said it was really bad and showed me a thistle that had been growing in the gutter, he said he’d never seen a thistle there before.

Skowvegas · 07/01/2018 02:19

We don't have them, but in previous houses where we did have them I don't remember ever cleaning them Blush

Rightsaidmabel · 07/01/2018 09:47

Essential maintenance. At least once a year.Do in autumn after leaves have fallen.Do even if you live in a leafless zone because of moss.
Small cost to avoid potential damage to the property ,including damage to rough casting, water ingress through windows near overflowing gutters.Tell your DH houses don't self clean !

boingbat · 07/01/2018 11:38

He's still saying it's pointless Angry I'll just sort it myself. Do they usually just do it off ladders?
