New TV - first world problem

DH had a nice bonus from work this Christmas so we have bought ourselves a new TV; one of those 4K OLED ultra HD ones (not a stealth boast - our old TV was a basic plasma we had as a wedding present 10 years ago). Anyway we set up the new TV last night and this morning I’m watching CBeebies with the DCs and the TV is almost like a sensory overload for me - it’s like it’s too bright, too big and the picture quality is too good. My eyes are struggling to cope with it.

AIBU to miss my old crappy telly a tiny bit Confused

Should have done your research a bit better. No sympathy from me.

You aren’t being unreasonable at all. We’re due to move in a few weeks and one of our first purchases will be a new tv. My husband wants a 49” smart ultra hd one and I’m already dreading it. I’m more than happy with out 40” old model as I hate TVs to dominate a room.
My parents have a huge tv and when I visit it’s always on and it’s always too loud and bright. Awful!

YANBU but fingers crossed you get used to it!

Peachyking000 · 06/01/2018 08:41

YANBU. We just got a new TV - our old one was ancient, and I’m hating the HD effect too.

Configure your TV correctly. Search for ' avforums settings' then follow those steps.

TVs will tend to come in a show off mode for TV showrooms - that's how you make them sane.

You need to change the picture settings. They are already set to the ‘shop’ settings to make them pop in a very bright shop so you need to tone it down to cope with your living room environment.
I hated it too for a few days. Then we got it set up right and it’s fab.

lackingimagination · 06/01/2018 08:48

forallthesaints not sure shops allow you to borrow the TVs and try them out in your living room Grin

As above, try changing the settings, the brightness, the backlight etc. Also - you'll get used to it, I had the same problem but it's fine now (I turned my backlight down from 100 to 50).

Thanks random DH’s brother is coming round later to have a look and help set up the sound bar so hopefully he will fiddle around with the configuration. DH and I aren’t very tech savvy.

Cross post with random, I’m pretty sure that’s the place we went to.

Commuterface · 06/01/2018 08:50

God I’m so glad it’s not just me. I did think I was being a bit precious with my sensory overload (I’m not usually bothered by anything).

I totally agree about the sensory overload btw, I still find HDR a bit too blinding, I only want my TV so bright!

We’ve had ours about a year and I still get a bit dazzled by it at times.

You can ‘calm it down’

I remember it was the same when we went from our crt screen to one of the first LED ones.
