To expect them to keep the glass until we're ready?

Currently having an extension built - par for the course its running about a month behind schedule. We have ordered a lot of bespoke glass, which the company are insisting on delivering on the initial date despite the fact we have nowhere to store in and not keen to leave £££ of glass in the garden.

We are using the company's preferred builder but he's not in house to them.

Aibu to insist they keep it until we are ready to install?

As Gertrude says, you could ask the builder to pay for storage or at least pay towards storage. Or you can ask the glass company if they'll keep it if you pay them storage. Or you can hire a storage unit yourself.
I wouldn't leave £30k of glass in the garden but I also wouldn't expect the glass company to hold it for a month. That's really quite cheeky of you.

Not their problem?

Drinaballerina · 05/01/2018 18:07

I can't help but feel they are slightly rresponsible duty. The glass company did more than just the glass, they've done all the planning and designing. The reasons we're behind are 1. Builder overran on previous job (theirs) and 2. They failed to provide the structural drawings until a week after he'd started so he was delayed in ordering rsj etc.

But i take the point its not fair to expect them to store it so I'll call them v nicely next week to see what can be done!

I think you can try, I would not be keen on storing a lot of glass in the garden for a month. They wouldn't be unreasonable to charge you a fee for storing it though.

If they won't or are too difficult about it I would include the lack of flexibility in any review of them. It's the sort of thing most householders aren't going to really be on the ball about but they must have experienced many times - they could have warned you when you ordered.

Who is the project manager? DH is a pm and from what you've just said, it suggests that the liability lies partly with the builder and partly with the window company through a combination of delays and lack of communication about them. That's their problem but only if the builder is also the PM.You shouldn't have to foot any bill if this is the case.

However, if you are acting as the PM and were aware of delays and didn't communicate them to the relevant parties then it's an unfortunate mistake.

Oblomov18 · 05/01/2018 18:21

Take it up with the builder and ask him for storage suggestions.

teaandtoast · 05/01/2018 19:07

We kept the glass for our greenhouse in a garden for about 8 months and when it was installed, some of the glass had been weirdly marked by the weather.

loveablether · 05/01/2018 21:28

Just hire a storage container/room or ask a friend with an empty garage (if they exist)

InfiniteSheldon · 05/01/2018 21:33

Sorry but it is their problem they designed it you've used their builder who they delayed why should you shoulder the rusk. A polite but very firm no should insufficient they are being very cheeky

nooka · 05/01/2018 21:51

You need to look at the contracts you have both with the glass company and with the builder. Likely both are written in favour of the builder/company (they usually are). If so all you can do is ask and hope that they accept that they bear some responsibility and that there is a better solution than the glass sitting around in your garden.

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 05/01/2018 21:56

The problem with trying to force them to store it is they don't need to store it and they probably won't take liability if it's broken. They can treat it as though OP didn't take delivery when she should have done.

Moanranger · 05/01/2018 21:57

When I had an extension built with a roof lantern & a lot of glass doors, we kept all the glass in the garage. Is this an option for you? I agree with those who said then it’s available exactly when you need it. Project managing the supply chain for building work is always tricky.

Drinaballerina · 05/01/2018 21:57

Apparantly (according to Dh) it all comes packed in some sort of weather proof material so it may not be too bad! Thanks for all the input, will be v polite on Monday and see if they csn hold it for a couple of extra weeks.

Ask for a recommendation to store it- preferably somewhere that you can also get insurance for it. They probably don’t have storage space for it either, but they may have an idea to help other than it being in the garden.

londonrach · 08/01/2018 08:22

Yabu. Its finished to time, they have other jobs. Where do you think they store it. If they did they they have to charge you storage costs then theyve the worry of getting delivery later to match in when you ready for it. Its better to Rent a storage locker if worried. We certainly done that before and its not badly priced.

Drinaballerina · 08/01/2018 12:46

Called them today, amusingly they won't deliver until we sign the final paperwork so we could make them keep it. But in the interest of not being unreasonable we've split the difference, they keep it for 2 more weeks then we keep it outside for 2 weeks.

Sounds like a good compromise Drina. Hope the extension goes smoothly.
