To ask if you can tune out noise?

DP thinks I am really odd but surely I can't be the only one?!

E.g. If I fall asleep with the television on, if I wake up in the middle of the night and it's still on, I can see the screen still on and picture but don't hear it. After about 30 seconds or so I can 'hear' it again. I assume brain just tunes out the sound when sleeping.

Anyone else?!

No! When I ‘tune out’ sound I still here it but it is in the background of my mind so to speak. I’ve never heard of your experience before.

Yes - I have experienced similar to this - it's quite odd!

Yes, and it has proven invaluable since I gave birth to one of the noisiest children ever to have walked the planet!

Yes! Not the same as you though, same as littlelights. Recently attended a school concert where family in front had two younger DCs, they were getting a bit bored after an hour or so and had started messing about a bit. At the end friend sat next to me says oh gawd weren’t they annoying? Eh, says I, didn’t hear them was listening to music, how could you not hear them says she?

Gillian1980 · 05/01/2018 00:28

Nope. I’m the opposite - I get massive sensory overload from sound and can’t tune it out at all. I find it hard to separate out sound too ie people talking, if there is any background noise.
