Hey not a AIBU

So I handed my moths notice in at work, my termination day is the 5th of January, so tomorrow, I'm currently working a night shift, and have a night shift tomorrow night!

I work 8 till 8, so tomorrow night at 12am it becomes the 6th of January, surely I shouldn't have to work 8 hours of the 6th of January when my notice is for the 5?

I'm no expert but I imagine you need to complete your shift that you start on the 5th.

Coastalcommand · 04/01/2018 23:17

It depends on your contract.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 04/01/2018 23:20

For decency you would work your shift as the last shift.

If you left at midnight for our company I’d tick the box for no re hire, is there a reason why you don’t want to honour the shift?

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 04/01/2018 23:22

Just re read and I suppose it also depends what time you handed your notice in and what your contract reads about shift work and notice periods.

Adrianflank · 04/01/2018 23:26

@dailymaildontstealmythread for decency I would normally work the shift, but the way this company dealt with me when I had a break down, i don't think I owe them that, I don't care about rehire I wouldn't come back to this place if my life depended on it

If your shift starts on your last day then you should finish the shift

Don't forget that you might need them as a reference in the future

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 04/01/2018 23:30

I’m sorry you have had a rough time and I hope you are leaving to move on to happier times Flowers

You do need to do the shift though.

Adrianflank · 04/01/2018 23:32

Sorry I should of put this in the main post aswell, I have been off sick for long term, 4 months, handed my notice in, They told me I had to work my notice on shift, but company policy is if you are off on long term sick, when you come back you have to do a phase return, which I have not done

grobagsforever · 04/01/2018 23:32

They have absolutely no recourse if you don't do the shift. Except not giving you a reference.

abualb · 04/01/2018 23:33

Hang on, folks, the OP needs to check with her employer, no one can answer this - what if her employer's insurance only covers work activities whilst legally employed i.e. until 23:59 on the fifth?

I'm sure it's just a technicality but I've also literally been on job sites where your security access would be revoked as of the end of day on your final agreed working date (all agreed beforehand) so there may be practical issues here (24hr sites and with shift patterns).

BritInUS1 · 04/01/2018 23:34

I would just work it and be the bigger person. It's one shift, you will get paid for it, just do it and move on

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 04/01/2018 23:40

Bit of an important part missed off your original post there op?

negomi90 · 04/01/2018 23:41

With Drs on changeover people still have to work nights. So if one rotation ends on the 3rd and the next rotation starts on the 4th, some people will work a night on the 3rd and finish on the 4th, they're just expected to negotiate with their new start what they'll miss, but it can be a nightmare.
You being off sick, makes it different. But otherwise if your job involves nights, yes it is reasonable to ask you to finish on a night shift including the hours onto the next day needed to finish the shift (my nights end at 9.30 am).

Adrianflank · 04/01/2018 23:41

Thanks for your help ladies, I guess I will be the bigger person and work it, even tho I think it's wrong they expect me to work 8 hours on the 6th and all of the other shit they have put me through these last few months!

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 04/01/2018 23:53

If you are truly not fit to work then speak to your gp and see if they agree to extend your cert to the 6th which will cover your last shift and notice period.

Wishing you the best with it all Flowers

Adrianflank · 05/01/2018 00:54

@dailymaildontstealmythread truth be told, if I hadn't got this new job, I would of still be signed off, I have spent the last 2 years getting bullied by my line manager and his manager, they made me feel worthless, I had no confidence to find a new job, then back in the summer I had a break down, having the break down was the final straw, I knew I had to leave because it would of carried on, I only came back to work for my notice because I just thought, fuck them!

It would be terrible if you got food poisoning or that dreadful flu virus that is going around - take it easy 😜

putonyourdancingshoes · 06/01/2018 07:48

Make sure you're getting paid for the whole shift though, and they won't try and fob you off with just trying to pay you for the hours you worked on the 5th!

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 10/01/2018 23:29

Hope things went well this week, what did you decide was best for you?
