To wonder if I'll get a pay rise

I'm in a position of management at work, currently on a little more than the minimum wage.

Will my wage increase in April when the minimum wage increases?

Thanks

Nobody can possibly answer that question other than your employer, surely?

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 04/01/2018 17:30

Unlikely, unless you will be earning less than minimum wage

ButchyRestingFace · 04/01/2018 17:31

Would your current salary fall below the NMW from April?

19lottie82 · 04/01/2018 17:31

Unless your current wage is under the new minimum wage, I doubt it. You would need to negotiate a raise with your boss.

Why on Earth are you taking on management responsibilities for such a low wage?

isitme88 · 04/01/2018 17:32

Only if you are currently on MW. If you are and the NMW is set to increase, then of course you will get an increase. If you will be on more than the MW when it increases, then it is highly unlikely that you will be

Mumof56 · 04/01/2018 17:35

If you have upskilled and/or added value to the company a since your last review you'll have a good case to ask for one. Justify why you deserve one to them.

tulip85 · 04/01/2018 18:44

So my colleagues that I manage will be earning basically nearly the same as me even though I'm their team leader? Just asking!

You need to ask your employer, not us.

tulip85 · 04/01/2018 18:51

Thanks BlushConfused bit hostile

Does your contract guarantee a raise? I've never had one that says that though. Maybe you need to ask for one rather than wait.

MyYoniFromHull · 04/01/2018 18:54

If it helps, at my work we got a payrise when nmw went up last time, even though I'm not close to the nmw but the staff I lead are. So it's not a crazy question. Obvs as a percentage it was much smaller as we got the same uplift per hour.

MyYoniFromHull · 04/01/2018 18:56

I know other places where the team leader type roles are only 50p or less ph more than the entry level posts and the gap gets very small indeed but people are often doing it for the role /status rather than for the extra £

MorningstarMoon · 04/01/2018 18:59

Depends who your employer is. You need to ask them.

BritInUS1 · 04/01/2018 18:59

As others have said, you need to ask your employer, how could anybody else possibly know?

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 04/01/2018 19:05

It really is a question for your employer. Ime it's not uncommon for a manager to earn very little more than their staff. In fact when I started with my current employer I earned just over £60 more a month than one of my staff.

wowbutter · 04/01/2018 19:15

I used to do nights as a carer, I was the senior carer, overseeing a team of eight.
Roughly, we did ten hours, so our pay was per hour, but over night.
The carers got 70 a night, and I got 90.
Then they got 76 and I got 90.
Nobodies duties changed, but minimum wage did, so they had to be paid it.

Littledrummergirl · 04/01/2018 19:25

In my experience it will be unlikely or you'll get a smaller rise than those earning less.
At some point you will be told you are lucky to have a job and need to be more productive as the company isnt making enough to pay you more. They may restructure to give you more responsibility, a gap between the pay levels but not the proper training and time to allow you to do the job properly. This of course is because you aren't productive enough.

Your employer won't be concerned about your worsening financial conditions, the tax credit /benefits system will subsidise their business.

My advice is to look for an employer who will value you and your skills. They are still out there.

Some employers who employ NMW staff also increase wages higher up the chain when there’s a mandated NMW increase, in order to maintain the differential. Others don’t. You need to refer to any relevant policies your employer has about pay reviews and/or ask your manager.

WhiskeySourpuss · 04/01/2018 20:30

It really does depend on your employer.

My employer revises all salaries in April to coincide with the rise in NMW & in general everyone gets a raise but it's not guaranteed.
