To think I should at least be able to get out of bed?

6 weeks pregnant. Horrible morning sickness. Mostly nausea and a lot of retching, vomiting about 5 times per day. I can’t even get up out of bed this morning without ending up with my head down the toilet.

AIBU to think it would not be dramatic to call in sick for my night shifts?

Anyone have any miracle cures? I’ve tried keeping biscuits by the bed, nibbling ginger biscuits, eating little and often, drinking lots of water... nothing is helping!

Poor you! I'm 27 weeks and I had the same as you up until 20 weeks. Am much better now but still retching and feeling sick. I was on anti sickness meds up until two weeks ago.
It was very hard, i have a four year old to run around after but only work part time so was able to rest in the afternoons. I had to bring dd to bed with me every afternoon.
Nothing got rid of it but I found basically eating constantly helped a bit.
Your dr will prescribe anti sickness meds if you are vomiting.
I hope it passes relatively quickly.
And definitely ring in sick

I had similarly bad morning sickness - but didn’t take any time off work. I just told everyone about it so that everyone understood when I was a bit late for work, had to suddenly run off and throw up and so on.

No one ever offered me drugs until I was in labour and I remarked that I had the worlds worst indigestion and the midwife gave me Zantac. What a revelation that was. Definitely ask for drugs!

Keep a glucose type drink - lucozade / sports drink - by the bed and sip it when you wake early. If it doesn’t help then anti sickness tablets. They were my saviour last time around.

What job do you do OP?
Is it a physically demanding job or can you collapse in front of a computer and count down the hours until the end of your shift?

I'm a nurse and when my sickness kicked in there was absolutely no way I could have worked. Running around a ward for 14 hours was impossible when I couldn't eat, couldn't drink, could barely stand up and couldn't go about 20 minutes without wanting to be sick. I was signed off at 6 weeks pregnant and was off with sickness for about three weeks.

My managers were very understanding and when I returned from sickness I was taken off clinical duty and had my hours reduced because I simply couldn't do the job. I suffered with sickness until I was about 19-20 weeks pregnant and without my Manager's Support I don't know how I would have coped.

Do your Managers know that you are pregnant?

If you genuinely don't feel well enough to work then don't feel bad at all about calling in.

Congratulations on your pregnancy Flowers

Oh goodness

I'm 18 weeks with my second and have had morning sickness with both pregnancies. This one has been my worst though.

I feel you are vomiting for longer than a few hours phone your maternity unit as you may need some fluids and to reduce the ketones in your urine.

This is what I had to do at around 8 weeks pregnant. It really helped to get lots of fluids into me

I was also prescribed cyclizine hydrochloride which I think worked a wee bit

Queen I’m actually a midwife so really should be better equipped to deal with this but it’s totally knocked me for six. I just can’t imagine rushing around the labour ward with a sick bowl in hand.

Thanks all, am going to ring the GP this afternoon when afternoon surgery starts to see if they will come describe an antiemetic. It’s only been 5 days and I honestly can’t go on like this.

If you are a midwife then all the more reason not to go in. Your patients will be relying on you to keep them and their babies safe so if you can't perform because of how you feel then stay home.

Sohardtochooseausername · 04/01/2018 12:01

Ooh gosh sorry I should have checked what you did for a living! I can’t imagine it would be very possible to do midwifery with bad morning sickness! I hope you find a way to manage it and it doesn’t last too long for you.

justilou1 · 04/01/2018 12:30

Oh Honey, I'm feeling ya! I had hyperemisis and was on zofran for both of my pregnancies. (No 2 was twins.). It stopped me from throwing up, but I still felt like I was on a wildly rocking ship. You might need some medication.

BellyBean · 04/01/2018 13:44

Don't be a hero. Get meds. I found doing my best to get protein/carbs down me early on it set me up better for the day.

ProseccoPoppy · 04/01/2018 13:56

Until you are able to get an anti emetic, in case it is of any use stuff that helped me included very cold fizzy water (somehow stayed down better than plain), lollies made from very watered down juice, and those fizzy refresher/love heart type sweets.

Sympathy! I am 7 weeks tomorrow and morning sickness just kicked in. I have a 4yr old to get to school and a 2yr old to look after, its horrendous! I threw up in the kitchen sink this morning. It’s my day off but I’ll have to go in to work Monday next week, I’m dreading it already. I did get anti sickness meds last pregnancy which took the edge off but will see how I go this time. It does help to get up and try to get some fresh air, I find laying horizontal makes it worse! Xx

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 05/01/2018 12:56

Thanks for all your help and sympathy yesterday ladies.

I got a prescription for cyclizine yesterday afternoon but I’m even worse today. Can’t eat anything at all! Just opening the fridge made me vomit! I managed to cook and eat dinner last night ffs, I thought I was on the up! Another call to the GP this afternoon I guess!
