I have off sock baskets and bags coming out my ears! I'm seriously considering binning them all (in recycling obvs) and buying lots a plain black ones. AIBU?

Not unreasonable at all, I done this year's ago and it is so much easier.

Seriouslyjuicy · 04/01/2018 10:24

I have done this. Its much easier

drspouse · 04/01/2018 10:24

No, don't do it. Then your socks will end up in your DCs/DH's drawers.

I foolishly bought DS some plain black, grey and white pants, now they are always ending up in my drawers. And vice versa. Funnily enough neither of us fit into each other's pants as he is 6.

TenancyTroublesAgain · 04/01/2018 10:24

Can you recycle socks?!

Yanbu though

Applesandpears23 · 04/01/2018 10:25

We all wear the same mens black socks. It is brilliant. No need to pair or sort, just put a handfull in each drawer.

Kelsoooo · 04/01/2018 10:25

Don't do it.

Each family member needs a way of identifying their socks. I'd reccomend individual little bags for washing each person's socks.

Runningoutofusernames · 04/01/2018 10:26

YABU. I tried this genius tip from some mumsnet thread, but they all fade unequally and you either have more trouble matching up sizes (if your feet are quite different) or with the bigger footed person stretching them out.
Was very sad, but have since gone to M&S and got those ones that are black on top and coloured on the bottom - easy to match, but also if one goes missing it doesn't matter much if one foot has a blue sole and the other orange. Best of both worlds!

Coldhandscoldheart · 04/01/2018 10:26

No! As soon as they go through the wash, they’re all different. No more pairs.

SisterMortificado · 04/01/2018 10:26

Deeply, deeply U.

Mismatched, brightly coloured socks are a source of joy for me.

Life is too short to worry about pairs. Try it.

drspouse · 04/01/2018 10:26

Apples I'm assuming you are all the same size!

DS and DH have black socks (his for school, he's 6, DH is a men's size 11, so easy to distinguish).
I have black socks with coloured toes
DD has madly coloured socks.
(I have a few of those and DS has a load too).
None of us could fit in each other's socks except that DD can wear DS' but they are a bit big.
Even on DS mine would be comedy and DH's on me would be like a Christmas stocking.

Seriouslyjuicy · 04/01/2018 10:27

No they dont kelso...all socks become communal.

SaucyJack · 04/01/2018 10:27

No, no, no!

It isn't easier unless you live alone, and you've only got one size of sock in the house.
Much easier to match a pattern up.

My top tip is to buy two packs of each pack of patterned socks. Once you've got four of any one design knocking about, you're guaranteed to match up a pair eventually.

drspouse · 04/01/2018 10:28

Running I think I am going to get DD some of that type for school if I can find them as she'll be a very slightly different size to DS. If we got them both black either they'd all end up in her drawer and he'd moan, or they'd all end up in his drawer and he'd stretch the smaller ones.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 04/01/2018 10:28

Embrace odd socks, my children have 😂😂

I do pair straight after washing and if its pair isnt found within a month it gets binned!

bumblingbovine49 · 04/01/2018 10:28

I did this but I have what I think is quite a unique situation in that I havce particulalrly large feet for a woman (size 8-9), DH has small feet for a man (size 8-9) and DS (13), has size 9.5 feet.

This means we all wear the same size socks so I have bought only black socks for the last couple of years (though some do have a bit of cloupr/pattern so do still need to be matched) which is brilliant, I just pair them up and randonly assign them to drawers. No need to worry about the size or whuch belong to who. We still have some non-black sports socks but again they are all the same size so just randomly throw them in the draw for whoever has the least number

ilovekitkats · 04/01/2018 10:28

YANBU. I did this years ago and now always have a pair. I only buy white socks for DD. She always has a pair.

I buy plain black or the ones with coloured toes sometimes and I don’t care if they match either, any two socks are a pair to me.

Cantuccit · 04/01/2018 10:29

Could you get different coloured socks for each child/person?

Black for you, pink for DH, blue for DD and red for DS?

That way you don't have to wear black socks deformed by DH's larger feet.

Deedee248 · 04/01/2018 10:30

I would definitely have one colour for each member of the family. Black socks for everyone is a nightmare when it comes to sorting the clean laundry!

CompletelyUnknown · 04/01/2018 10:30

Do it now! My DH socks were all black but ALL different it was infuriating. I'm a fan of bold bright socks with patterns they are so easy to match. So I binned his socks and bought a massive batch of matching black socks. Life is easier now 😁

Andrewofgg · 04/01/2018 10:35

I wear only plain black socks, a big batch bought at a time, no damned pairing them up. Do it.

Seriouslyjuicy · 04/01/2018 10:36

Has anyone got good black sock recommendations? Im not loving our cheap as chips Asda socks

Gingernaut · 04/01/2018 10:41

I had this idea and bought batches of black socks from Sainsbury's.

However, different batches have different manufacturers, different fabrics, dye lots and wear resistance.

As long as the finished product matches the retailer's specifications, there's a lot of of variation between the different batches of what, on the face of it, appear to be identical pairs of socks.

I'm now stuck with a variety of black, charcoal and grey socks, with different wear patterns and varying elastic qualities, which I need a good light to sort through.

GreenTulips · 04/01/2018 10:44

I would definitely have one colour for each member of the family

How does this work with 3 teens all going to the same school and all needing black or grey socks? Plus DH who wears a suit so also needs black socks

Your thinking is flawed

Newyearnewyew · 04/01/2018 10:45

Yes, dh and I share socks, m and s plain black - very good value - about 6 pairs for a fiver?

DC have their own socks but not wasting my life trying to match socks has been wonderful.

VeganIan · 04/01/2018 10:47

There are 5 of us. I have minimised. Me and DH wear the same (mostly).
DC1 &2 wear the same sock socks, they each have their own home socks but with something I'll remember is their's on - like Dc1 loves dinosaurs, he has dinosaur socks; DC2's name starts with M, he has monsters. DC3 has tights and pink socks. Dc1 has pants, Dc2 has boxers, DC3 has pink.

As they get older I think we will just go for one massive clean sock repository in the upstairs hall way.
