Baby due v soon. I have researched contraception for afterwards and have decided on the mini pill. It can be taken on day 21 after giving birth. I’ve asked the midwife and gp can I have a prescription before or when I leave hospital so I can start on day 21.....

They are saying I have to wait till 6 week check. I want to be sorted out and protected before then surely it’s my choice ? The reasons given are just that I may want to choose something else-I won’t I’ve looked at all options available and want the mini pill and have explained my reasons for this.
Can they really make me wait ?

If your gp won't give you a prescription, it might be worth going to a sexual health clinic and asking for it there.

I was in the same boat as you op.

I was on the mini pill when ds was conceived (despite being super vigilant with taking it) but it was primarily to stop my horrendous (literally more painful than labour) periods, the contraceptive side was just a useful side effect.

Dr tried to convince me to get a coil. I basically told them to get to fuck, give me my pill, I am NOT suffering those periods again. Dr then tried to convince me that they would be less awful after baby and I told him I was not willing to take that chance (as before the pill they had regularly made me faint and I was going to be in sole charge of dc for the majority of the time when dp went back to work.)

I gave up arguing with them and went to the sexual health clinic. The nurse there rolled her eyes at 'the bloody idiot male Dr, they don't have a clue do they?' and gave me three months worth after doing a general checkup.

She did also say no sex until six weeks as I had a couple of tears. It was about three months before I wanted sex but I was glad to not have to deal with crippling period pain and a tiny baby

You could try ordering it here: www.pharmacy2u.co.uk/onlinedoctor

I've ordered different medicine from them in the past. Consultation is free, but you'll have to pay cost price for pill.

I think you can get a prescription from the hospital on discharge.
At least by then they’ll know what kind of birth you had and any complications.

OP the mw cannot prescribe contraception, so really it is the GP you should take issue with, not the mw.

The GP cannot give you a script for the pill as you are pregnant. They need to wait until you are postpartum so they can assess your health at that point. Condoms and BF should be perfectly adequate for the first few weeks. As you said yourself, make an appt as soon as you can after comes for a GP appt. Is there a different GP in your practice that you could see? I would be raging at them trying to push you towards the mirena when you have made it perfectly clear what you want.

You should be able to get it quickly after giving birth. With my last I got prescribed the pill 2 weeks after delivery. I’ve never understood the must wait 6weeks that some people say though my mw’s have always said as soon as you feel ready be that 1day, 1week, 1month or 1 year after.

I will say that I had pills left over from when I fell pregnant and I started taking these about 3 weeks after birth as soon as I stopped bleeding.
I then had months and months of spotting, small clots, bleeding etc. Had scans to investigate and they couldn’t find anything.
Eventually I was told to come off the pill for a month and this resolved everything.
Starting back on the pill before your body has self regulated it’s hormones can cause months of bleeding as with the extra hormones it doesn’t know if it’s coming or going.

Yes of course they can make you wait.

I just made a routine doctors appointment for 2 weeks after baby arrived. Asked for mini pill, got prescription.

For those saying ‘you won’t want to’ how on earth do you know how she’ll feel? I had 2 straight forward vaginal deliveries, no stitches etc and had sex before 6 weeks with both. Bleeding had stopped and I felt fine.

I've got mine from Lloyd's Pharmacy online in the past when I haven't been able to get an appointment, there's a small charge but they deliver it straight to your nearest pharmacy
