To think this discourages use of public transport.

I live in a big city. I had a parcel to collect from the new sorting office that has been moved to the outskirts of the city from the old one in the city centre. It occurred to me that should had needed to get public transport (i was in the car) form pretty much anywhere in the city it would have been dificult. Then I realised most of the big shops have also moved out of the city centre to various locations on the outskirts of the city centre equally hard to get to by bus. Most routes needing at least a connection made in the city centre. Surely if we want people to use public transport we need to encourage shops and services to stay in a central place accessible to all the main bus routes, i.e. the city centre?

Property prices/rent in central locations is driving businesses out.

Public transport should adapt to the needs of the people it serves, not the other way round! Lobby the bus companies about this.

Or conversely we need a public transport nextwork that’s remembers people sometimes travel to places that aren’t cities.

I think it's a shame we're losing city and town centres. The lower rents and benefits for businesses makes it seem inevitable. What I feel needs to happen is that the transport strategy for the city/town needs to reflect these changing trends and ensure public transport routes are updated to enable people to get to where they need to go. Key destinations should always be served by public transport. You could contact the bus company and feedback your experience to them.

Callamia the trouble is I can't see how transport can adapt? The shops and services (they are currently looking to move the central police station too) are moving out to many locations at all different ends of the city. Some of them are miles apart. You made need one shop at a retail park in the South end, another shop at a retail park in the north end and then pick up the post at a buisness park in the east end. You could spend all day on public transport trying to do this (and costly too).

You can't expect businesses to pay a king's ransom in rent because of the lack of proper public transportation. They've obviously done their research and found no loss of revenue caused by moving.

YANBU at all.

There's a definite short sightedness that goes with charging high rates in city centres and then letting them decline when organisations vote with their feet and move out.

RavingRoo · 04/01/2018 07:38

I agree with you OP. People who live in big cities are often spoiled - I used to live somewhere where it cost £10 per day and nearly an 1hr30mins to travel 5 miles into a suburb. The only reason why people didn’t try to walk it was because it was an A road.

yanbu
but as previous poster said the bus routes need to change as well.
postal service should be a priority though imo.

Our out of town retail parks all have good public transport links (in some cases better than getting to the centre as although the buses go to the centre they go there via a very long winded route and pretty much stop after 6pm when workers have gone home)

But sadly, we are becoming the nation of the car driver. It's a vicious circle - people drive because public transport is poor; public transport is not used and therefore cut even further ...

fluffycat5601 · 04/01/2018 07:57

Same thing happened with our post office sorting office but the buses did change to accommodate this. It's also next to a huge retail park. In my city I can get to all major retail parks on the bus, prob have to change via the city centre but it can be done Smile
