Just that really. Should I set a budget and buy some books/ games/ audible books? Do I have to do it all through amazon? Amy recommendations for decent games like fifa 18 that don't cost 50 quid or is the new reality I'm in?!
Sorry lone parent here, bought ds aged 7 a kindle fire for Xmas and literally no idea what do do with it. Flowers

Has it come with the free amazon kids there is loads on there.

Visit the App Store and have a look there are many fab free games on there.

MickeyLuv · 04/01/2018 00:11

You are definitely not going to get games like FIFA 2018 for less than 50 quid!

There are lots of cheaper (and even free) games that they can download, depends what kind of thing your DSis into really. Let us know and I'm sure someone will be able to recommend something. Even books you will probably have to pay for.

CheshireChat · 04/01/2018 00:19

Loads of free games available for it.

But you can pay for the Fire for Kids which gives you access to loads of books and games.

Depending where you are, you can also get a library app for books- I have borrowbox.

My twins got kindles for their 8th birthday and now they are 10 we have just upgraded to bigger screen with more memory.

They have Minecraft, Musically, Roblox and various nonsense (I think) games. Nothing can be bought on their kindles as it goes through my Amazon account. They often ask to download games, such as Crossy road, plants versuses zombies, fruit ninja. DD is into horses and has an online stables and a load of horses. All a bit silly but quite harmless. They have recently got into YouTube to watch DANTDM and BRO&SIS you tubers. They have never even asked for over 18 games. I do have kid settings on. They stay downstairs at night and they are not allowed on them in the morning before school. I think that's all pretty standard.

Coastalcommand · 04/01/2018 00:20

CBBC app is good - can download episodes of programmes onto it to watch later.

NavyGold · 04/01/2018 00:24

I bought the kids edition for DD for Christmas and she busys herself with all the free kids content that comes with it.

There’s a couple of apps that she asked me to download specifically (Furby connect etc) but I have no idea how to move them from my profile over to hers Blush

GreenTulips · 04/01/2018 00:34

Go into Amazon - manage devises and click the app - over on the right you see 'down load to ....' and chose her devise

It downloads for free on to her kindle

Must be on the full site to do this via a laptop of possible

GreenTulips · 04/01/2018 00:36

* correction - just looked and they've added ... on the app so press that and chose to deliver too option

milkysmum · 04/01/2018 00:39

My 2 children have both got fires ( they are 6 and 8)- there is so much free stuff thst generally that is all they need. Lots of time on YouTube too!

ClaudiaD13 · 04/01/2018 00:40

You can set restrictions too, I give my kids a maximum of two hours a day and they switch off completely after 7pm (after I discovered DS2 kept sneaking his into bed)

NavyGold · 04/01/2018 00:42

Thanks @greentulips! I was trying to do it on the device itself which explains why I couldn’t figure it out!

Ohb0llocks · 04/01/2018 00:46

Another vote for fire for kids

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 04/01/2018 04:24

Mine loves Animal Jam

Sunnysidegold · 04/01/2018 07:03

In the app store there is Amazon underground which lets you download things which are completely free, any in app purchases are free too.that is quite handy.

My children are 6 and 7 and have Minecraft, roblox, subway surfer., hoopa city, hangman and some Lego games.

I have disabled the chat function in some games, like roblox.they can only download new content through me as I have the password. I haven't found any books worth downloading for children...
Am I missing something here? I don't want to.spend a fortune!

Alicetherabbit · 04/01/2018 07:05

@Greentulips, thanks for the tip, I also couldn't work it out and was giving toddler my account with flight mode activated Grin

Shimshiminysheroo · 04/01/2018 13:29

Thanks all. Can I download fire for kids, or should I have bought it with it? Also, I have bought a few dvds recently which say I can download them as well, do people do this and does it a work fine? Really appreciate this info. Ds particularly interested in audio books, does anyone use an audio book borrowing app?

CheshireChat · 04/01/2018 13:29

You can also add content on the tablet through settings- profile- kids account- add content and you'll get apps/ videos/ books.

Fiddly though and you can't add a full YouTube account for example.

CheshireChat · 04/01/2018 13:31

You download the fire for kids, you'll get a free trial then you pay something like £4/ month I think.

Moo678 · 04/01/2018 13:41

Did you buy it from amazon? If so it should have fire for kids on it already - it's free for the 1st year with the amazon package. Not sure if you bought it elsewhere.

Like others say once you have the amazon kids interface your son can chose what apps he wants (all included in the amazon kids price) my girls 6 and 8 caught on very quickly and now download whatever they fancy.

There are loads of books you can download for free and many of these have the function to have the book read to you - my youngest does this so we haven't investigated an audio book app. You could go for audible since that's an amazon product but I think it's quite expensive to buy books (the app is free).

I'm sure if you google there will be guides to setting up the fire for kids - (it took me a bit of time to work out how to transfer apps which weren't included in the kids package but I still wanted them to have.) I spent a couple of evenings setting up ours before the kids got their hands on them.

CheshireChat · 04/01/2018 19:15

We bought the fire from Amazon, but it didn't come with either fire for kids or a case as we picked the fire 8 as it's got better specs and couldn't stretch to get them all at once.

Fire for kids also limits content- you can set the age.

Bananacakerocks · 04/01/2018 19:21

DS 10 has a Kindle Fire and it has been brilliant! He has Kindle Kids and loves watching videos and playing games. I set his age to 2 years younger at first because I was worried about content being appropriate, now it's set to 9 and I'm keeping it under review.

I paid £5 for Minecraft and he is allowed another couple of games so long as they are age appropriate. I've also gone through and removed a lot of the games on Kindle Kids that I know he will never play (Barbie etc)

Do not download YouTube Kids as it is not the same as in iPhone and gives them full access to YouTube.
