AIBU to think this income/rent ratio works?

21 years old - take home pay is £1000 per month, rent is £350 sharing private rental with mate. AIBU to think rent of £350 plus half of all bills (2 bed house) plus food, phone etc etc is achievable on this pay? No kids, no other large expenses like car or anything involved.

Is this reasonable or am I just a tight fisted old hag for thinking it's doable?

Seems very workable for a 21 year old without any dependants to me.

ludothedog · 03/01/2018 19:39

Absolutely reasonable. Why? Who says it's not?

CMOTDibbler · 03/01/2018 19:41

Even saying £100 a month for bills, £100 for food, thats still £450 a month left over. A massive amount!

That sounds entirely reasonable - in my rented flat it was costing me £600 per month in rent and my take home pay was £1200! Bill and council tax added another £100+ a month. You'll be fine.

The 21 year old... I think he believes that access to a full sky package, iphone X, daily takeaways and 3 nights out per week are enshrined in human rights law and parents refusal to subsidise should be dealt with by the Hague.

Just wanted to check I wasn't being entirely unreasonable so thanks!

Does he not grasp the concept that 21 = grown up = your parents don't your living costs?

KanielOutis · 03/01/2018 20:01

Can he rent somewhere cheaper, maybe a 2 bed flat? It’s doable but he could do it cheaper if he wants more disposable income.
