To claim PPI refund myself?

Workingmummyto1 · 03/01/2018 16:24

About three months ago I contacted a PPI refund firm about whether I had had PPI on a credit card and a loan I took out c. 20 years ago. I had no old paperwork to confirm but had a feeling I might have had the insurance.

They came back to me and confirmed I had PPI cover on the credit card which, as I was a student at the time, I should not have been sold.

They ran through the details of the claim, and told me there fee was 30% of any refund. I was surprised but stupidly said ok, and they have sent through the paperwork in the post to sign and return.

My DH went nuts and said I was crazy to pay them 30% when I could claim it myself for free. I haven't signed the agreement they sent. Would it be unreasonable to ignore it and submit my own claim?

YANBU! If you can do it on your own you absolutely should - they're parasites taking money from people like you by trying to convince you you need them. Go it alone and keep all the money, it's yours!

Yes do it yourself.

It's very easy.

Grumblepants · 03/01/2018 16:32

As long as you haven't signed an agreement with them then do it yourself. It's so easy now. But be prepared as the PPI company will hound you, so you may want to block the number. I personally would rather burn my money than those stalkers get a penny of it.

It's dead easy, Moneysupermarket has a template you can adjust to suit your own circumstance. Once your initial letter has been received your lender will send a more detailed form to be completed and returned. They then assess your claim, make and offer and if agreed pay out either by cheque or direct bank transfer. It's that simple.

I did it on my own. Ended up with a rather large payout! Whoop!

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 03/01/2018 19:14

I did it for 2 old store cards using the Money Saving Expert letters. They paid up pretty quickly actually. I had the account details and some old statements (Dad found them in his loft!).

Do it yourself, you don’t need account numbers, in fact in the space for account numbers on letter or form write ‘all’ as they then have to check all your accounts and not just the ones you give them (got an extra £300 doing this) it is so easy do not pay 40% to a company forbsomethibg you can do yourself.

I thought I wouldn’t be able to as I had no paperwork and no account numbers etc. I wrote a letter saying I believed ppi was mis-sold as I did not understand it wasn’t compulsory and giving my name, address at the time and date of birth. I then googled each company and the word ppi and got the addresses that way. You usually hear back within a week. I got claimforns from them and any details I didn’t know o simply wrote ‘cannot recall’ on the form. I got £4k

Don't sign the paperwork. Pursue it yourself.

I'm in a similar position. Now that you know...you can write the company directly.

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 03/01/2018 20:54

I did it myself inc an appeal for a £7k cheque

llmb · 04/01/2018 07:12

Sorry to butt in but what if you don’t know what bank you had the account with if it’s an old one?

TheHodgeHeg · 04/01/2018 07:17

Definitely do it yourself! Are you sure the ppi claims company have even checked whether you had ppi? I wouldn't put it past them to say "yes, you were missold ppi" to everyone and then send in the forms and see what comes back from the banks...

Llmb you could try writing to all the major banks? Other than that, no idea.
