To wonder if this is odd behaviour

I have named changed for this, because admittedly it is rather embarrassing!

I'm wondering how odd it is to talk to yourself and act out fake scenarios. I think I've done this since I was a child, but sometimes I will be by myself, be thinking of something indepthly, then all of a sudden I'll have created a scenario and be acting it out to myself. For example, a moment ago I was being interviewed on television about quite a niche topic, with the interviewee being very impressed with my answers.

I will then realise what I am doing, feel a bit embarrassed even though I am alone, and stop.

These scenarios aren't really things that have happened, just fantasy thinking I guess! Obviously I've never admitted this to anyone in my real life before, so am I being unreasonable to ask if this is odd behaviour, and wonder if anyone else does this?

I sometimes talk out loud to myself and my husband will ask who I'm talking to......I lie and pretend I was singing and he's says 'nope, definitely just talking'

I'm have a vivid imagination and I'm always imagining alternative scenarios and conversations Blush

caoraich · 03/01/2018 15:29

I do this when I'm driving, play out conversations/scenarios. It helps with work stress sometimes.

Sometimes at home alone I am also a Cat Whisperer - we have nice chats about dreamies Blush

comedycentral · 03/01/2018 15:29

I do stuff like this all the time, I have always had a big imagination though and I played with dolls and small world toys way into my esrly teens! 😀😀

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 03/01/2018 15:30

Yup. And it makes things a bit more entertaining imo ;)

When I was cleaning my room (as a child) I was "actually" being a bomb difuser. And cleaning the cat litter box was me doing humanity a tremendous service by disposing of "dangerous" (I was a kid) materials....

And when I'm biking or running I'm a "super hero" whooshing trough the forest Blush

VileyRose · 03/01/2018 15:31

I do this. Anything from interviews to singing contests. I use it to practice public speaking too.

justified · 03/01/2018 15:33

I do it all the time. I'm witty funny clever and beautiful in fantasy land and everybody loves me.Grin

NameChangedIHave · 03/01/2018 15:33

DurhamDurham haha, I have the same conversation with mine! No I just say 'you' or 'MYSELF'.

OP posts:
FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 03/01/2018 15:33

Or a werewolf. I used to imagine being a werewolf or a similar mystical creature when training for competitions....

Oh, and detangling my little sister's hair was "bomb defusal" as well...

Tbh, I haven't wondered (up to now...) whether other people do the same ;)

But as long as we're able to differentiate reality from fiction it's fine imo.

shhhfastasleep · 03/01/2018 15:34

The world is suddenly a nicer place seeing so many people do this.

slothface · 03/01/2018 15:36

I do this loads! I have lots of ideas for a novel and I like acting out scenes from it, by myself. I even do the replying voices and different accents... definitely only when alone though.

theunsure · 03/01/2018 15:39

I do this a lot. Mostly in the car!
It can be practicing real conversations or issues that could/will happen or it can be completely fictitious. I only do my side of the conversations.
Happy to be considered mad - I already have a sleep disorder which makes me act out my dreams some times so perhaps it is related, who knows! I enjoy it though, so I think it is fine.

NameChangedIHave · 03/01/2018 15:40

shhhfastasleep I agree!

Totally normal (I hope)! I have loads of long running scenarios and fantasy lands in my head. Keeps me entertained for hours Grin

JapaneseBirdPainting · 03/01/2018 15:40

I always pretend I am a tv cook when I cook. And if I have problems sleeping I have a series of elaborate fantasies I run over in my head (one of which is being interviewed on Woman;s Hour for my amazing contribution to society) which helps relax me.

EvilDoctorHogmanayDuck · 03/01/2018 15:42

I do this! Xmas Shock

NameChangedIHave · 03/01/2018 15:42

SO MANY PEOPLE DO THIS. Very pleased with this outcome!

OP posts:
ToddlerIs2 · 03/01/2018 15:45

I can't do it out loud. I have a toddler. He'll assume i'm talking to him. I don't have a toddler in my imaginary head - he's always older

IHATEPeppaPig · 03/01/2018 15:46

OP I do this all the time- have done since childhood- I thought I was the only one Grin!! It's fine but I know it gets worse when I'm anxious so probably related in some ways!!!

Goingalonenow · 03/01/2018 15:50

I do it. I have a long term fantasy going on in my head at the moment...

mrsharrison · 03/01/2018 15:52

I do this! Very often I'm Bette Davis in All About Eve.
As i walk down stairs i say "what a dump" or "you're too short for that gesture". Or I'm being interviewed by Parky about the message in my latest novel.
Wonderful escapism.

EvilDoctorHogmanayDuck · 03/01/2018 15:52

I whisper, but it's when I'm gesticulating and someone walks in that it gets a bit embarrassing. Xmas Blush

I think it's abnormal not to do it tbh. Do some people on here have no imagination!

NewspaperTaxis · 03/01/2018 15:58

It's referenced in The Truman Show, where Truman's buddy explains away his feelings of incongruity by saying, hey, we all fantasise when we're on the can about being interviewed by CNN...

Then films like The Bourne Identity tap into the idea you have an alternative, more powerful persona that can suddenly out of the blue dispatch your enemies in a flash. Superhero films generally, to some extent, play upon this duality or fantasy world.
