Have you ever shouted in Work?

In anger, rather than over the noise of the boiler room?

I have. At a colleague who ate roll mop herring at his desk. I was just pregnant and it made me heave all day.

Twice. The first was someone who was kicking off about being asked to help out with food service. They had kicked off in front of guests and were continuing to scream and shout in the office. I handed them their things and shouted at them to leave. It was their first and last shift with us.
The second was when I was helping out food service a week later at the same venue and team leading. 3 guys thought it would be fun to treat it like a mates night out and that they didn't need to listen to me. I took their names and reported them to the kitchen manager. When one of them had a go at me for reporting him I shouted (though only because it was noisy) that if he carried on with his attitude, he wouldn't work another shift at that venue.
Those 2 aside, the only shouting I normally do is when working on football matches to make fans aware that my till is free if they want a chance of getting served before the match starts/half time ends.

No, no-one has ever shouted at my work since I started working there 3 years ago

This thread has made me think, WHY is it so common for chefs and restaurant owners/managers to scream bloody murder at staff? High pressure and shit hours play a part but it's also the only time in my life when I have seen actual physical violence towards colleagues too. I've had chefs slam people out of the way, throw things across kitchens, punch walls and one boss was poking me painfully in the chest repeatedly as he ranted at me and that caused me to have to take repeated steps backwards towards a flight of stairs. I was 16 and hadn't done anything wrong, NO ONE could keep ahead of the orders that days as it was NY day and we were beyond slammed. In my life I've worked in a LOT of kitchens and have seen some crazy shit that would never ever happen in most places of work.

I used to work in hospitality. First as a waitress and then as a hotel receptionist. I have to say, although head chefs were usually pretty stressed / focussed and a bit grumpy, they never actually lost it and shouted in my presence, (in anger I mean. Not shouting to be heard). I love watching master chef etc and some of the Michelin star head chefs they go and work with manage to seem positively cuddly. So I don’t think it has to be a shouty environment.

Saying that I know some friends who were also waitresses who were reduced to tears a few times, just not where I worked.

Not only have I definitely never shouted at anyone at work (I have been shouted at, though - I instantly lost respect for him as it was so just so unprofessional and pathetic), I can't remember the last time I raised my voice at all. DH and I never do when we argue, and I don't know when I last argued with anyone else. I do think seeing adults shout at each other (outside of safety-critical 'that tree is falling over!' type scenarios) is pretty sad, really.

Our head chef has spent his whole life prior to taking on this pub working front of house. He knows what it’s like. He knows how to keep lines of communication open, and how valuable that is since it ultimately improves the experience for everyone.

So I agree, cheekyfucker. It doesn’t have to be like that.

Having said that, if the current owners leave the pub I work at now I will retrain into an entirely different field since I think it is uniquely lovely.

babigailwabble · 04/01/2018 10:04

absolutely not it's completely unprofessional and won't achieve anything. i've also never seen anyone shout at work.

PinkSquash · 04/01/2018 10:06

I've never shouted at a colleague unless it was for emergency assistance, had plenty of people shout at me sadly, all members of the public.

heron98 · 04/01/2018 11:13

No, never. I really have never had sufficient passion for any of my jobs to warrant anger.

Witchend · 04/01/2018 15:57

I shouted "call an ambulance" as I ran, but, no, not in anger, not can I see it ever happening.

gamerwidow · 04/01/2018 16:18

I have become very cross and used my stern voice but I haven’t shouted.
I have been sorely provoked too on occasion.

PiffleandWiffle · 04/01/2018 16:22

Yes, not within the past 6 months though as work seems to have purged most of the arses.

I much prefer a nice, scathing email highlighting all their failures though - at least I can pass that to HR ready for their next purge....
