To be scared of the wind!

chewablemunchkin · 02/01/2018 23:59

For many years I've had a phobia of severe weather. The wind in particular.

There is an amber warning in place for my area tonight, usually I'd get some wine in to calm my nerves but trying to cut down so didn't buy any tonight.

Currently in bed wearing earplugs trying to calm my anxiety. But finding it hard.

Anyone else have the same or similar fears that could offer a comforting word or two?

Me too. I never used to feel this way and seem to be getting worse with every gale.

chewablemunchkin · 03/01/2018 00:07

I've gotten better with it over the years but not settling tonight. Wish I'd bought some wine now!

Me too. I can do most weather, dont mind snow or thunder & lightning but the wind does frighten me.
I won't be getting much sleep tonight.
Comforting to know someone feels the same x

PamelaBirthdaycake · 03/01/2018 00:12

Same here, howling wind creeps me out.

Want2beme · 03/01/2018 00:14

It freaks me out too, but I seem to be able to cope with it. Put your ear buds in and listen to something calming.

Gramgram · 03/01/2018 00:14

Yes I understand how you feel. Way back in 1987 I had some advertising hoarding crash down behind me as I was crossing a road. I wasn't hurt just frightened SD it was so close. So now I can't sleep when it is very windy outside. However it is dying down here in the South so will go to bed soon.

Hope you get some quality sleep soon. You are at least indoors and safe, I do wonder what our wildlife makes of this sort of weather.

Madwoman5 · 03/01/2018 00:16

Download headspace on your phone, it is quite good. Either that or replace earplugs with earbuds and play some meditation music loudly on loop.
I hate it too, especially at night.

steff13 · 03/01/2018 00:17

Wind freaks me out, too! I always think there's going to be a tornado, even though, logically, I know tornados are not caused by wind.

BashStreetKid · 03/01/2018 00:18

I must say, I like the wind when I'm cosy and warm and tucked up in bed, it makes me appreciate the warmth and comfort even more. I also enjoy thunderstorms provided I'm not out in them. One of my best strategies for getting to sleep is to imagine it's blowing a gale outside and lashing down with rain

Xihha · 03/01/2018 00:20

I actually quite like the noise of the wind, but we all have our fears, mine is buzzing noises, even phones vibrating (which is pathetic I know) can you put headphones on and drown it out a bit?

steff13 · 03/01/2018 00:20

I used to love thunderstorms, until we got a dog who's afraid of thunder. Now I spend all spring/summer wondering why thunderstorms always happen at 3am.

chewablemunchkin · 03/01/2018 00:24

Thanks all. Comforting enough just to know I'm not alone with this fear.

I do have headphones but unless I blasted it I'd still be able to hear it. It's the noise that scares me the most.
And even though I'm inside I'm scared my house will collapse on me Blush

gramgram that does sound frightening, glad you weren't hurt.
My main issue is even when inside I'm just not convinced I'm safe Sad

That’s how I feel - I end up convinced the chimneys are going to fall in.

Nopeno · 03/01/2018 01:05

Oh bless you, I don’t have the fear, in fact I love the wind and just went and stood out the front for a while, makes me feel a little closer to the wild.

But fear is fear and though logically we live in the UK so the likelihood of it ever being blowy enough to knock your house down is pretty much zero, logic doesn’t really factor in fear!

Play some music, even if it doesn’t drown it it can alter your mood. And try to sleep x

TunaSushi · 03/01/2018 01:09

I suggest you avoid going to USA, the storms are dreadful there, I have never experienced anything like it here.

Llanali · 03/01/2018 01:11

I’m with you. I was never scared before, but last year in storm Doris and 93mph w-inds, my Stables nearly took off and I lost a barn.
On Boxing Day we woke up to another barn having disappeared over the hedge.

I now lie awake, heart hammering and panic rising wondering which of my animals will be homeless and which of my buildings will cause damage to the neighbours/take out the power lines.

Gramgram · 03/01/2018 06:03

Well I thought it was dying down but it turns out DH had shut the kitchen window because it was whistling in the wind. Next doors recycling bin has blown over and their newspapers are everywhere. Going to turn the TV on now and find out how the rest of the UK is faring. Hope you are all safe.

Teatreedelight · 03/01/2018 07:17

I love it and lashing rain when I'm tucked up in bed

londonrach · 03/01/2018 07:19

Its died down. Hope you slept op

chewablemunchkin · 03/01/2018 07:22

I actually had a really restless and worrying night.

Feel better this morning as I can see none of the trees outside are tall enough to crash through the bedroom window (little one sleeps in her cot-bed under a window and I was so worried last night, I had her in with me)

I'm not usually like this but weather was the windiest I've ever heard it last night.

DollyPartonsBeard · 03/01/2018 08:46

I hate it too! Although it's better now I live in an actual house - two years in a static caravan on an exposed hill in Wales was terrifying when it was windy, even though the supports were concreted into the ground!

Want2beme · 03/01/2018 10:16

A massive bang woke me up last night. I thought it might be thunder but there wasn't anymore after it. I'm too terrified to look and see what might've caused it.
