To take kids on a holiday with a lot of driving involved?

Kids will be 2 and 5. We're thinking of a Scottish holiday that will incorporate Fort William (Jacobite steam train), Skye and the Isle of Harris as a rough idea at the moment.

This will involve quite a bit of time in the car and on a ferry.

I'm not sure if this will be too much for the kids and if it's more of a grown up holiday?

Normally we self cater in a lodge etc and base ourselves in one place and drive to places within an hour's reach.

I drove ds up to Mull from North East @1,2+3yo along with 5 other dc! Loved the journey, loved the ferry and booked for this year.
Many moons ago drove 6 dc from North East to Portugal, took ten days of camping en route!! Amazing, no need not to travel just because dc come along!! Dc live adventures imo!

Could you rent a campervan so they effectively have a "home" for the duration of the holiday? May be less unsettling than moving to different destinations every night.

I'm sure it's great for some kids, but if they suffer from travel sickness then don't do it to them. My parents loved 'driving holidays' like this and I spent most of the time in the back with a plastic bag. I still struggle with car travel now after years of it!

Dd has travel sickness, wears travel bands and no reading /I pad on the way!! Lots of out the window games, not so many loo /drink stops as it drags the journey out ime!

Where are you starting from?

We did central belt to ft William to Skye to Harris to lewis to aviemore and back down with a 2yr old. We only drove 2-3hrs a day and always over nap time. He loved it.

We have been very lucky with dd and have travelled to France from NW england via driving and ferry and she travels really well.

We were like you, feeling a bit anxious. Only thing is, it's one of those things where you aren't going to know until you try it.

We've done it a few times now since she was about 2. She is 9 now and still doesn't mind mega journeys.

Central belt also. Having looked into it properly this evening and what we would want to do is very expensive! For us anyway. Will have to look into a bit further I think!

We have a motor home. Maybe hire one?
