If you are given the wrong change in a shop, do you take it back?

If you realised after you got home?
Bought some items today in our local supermarket. Was given my change with the receipt on top so didn't notice and just shoved it in my pocket.

When I got to another shop I noticed I had too much but thought I had given a higher note than I thought as I did have one in my purse.

When I've got home I checked the receipt properly which is no use as it stated I gave her the correct cash when I didn't but I've found the higher note.

So would you go back (no car but only a couple of miles) or not.

Less than a tenner if that makes a difference.

I wouldn't.

MikeUniformMike · 02/01/2018 18:28

You probably only think you got the wrong change.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/01/2018 18:29

If it was the local corner shop yes, anywhere else no.

TenancyTroublesAgain · 02/01/2018 18:30

I personally would. They might get in trouble if the till is down by a certain amount I think?

NewYearNiki · 02/01/2018 18:30

No.

You don't sound 100% sure either.

MissionItsPossible · 02/01/2018 18:31

If a small or independent business, yes.

If a small amount from a big chain of shops then no. I have also been over charged/double charged small amount from the supermarket and not been back to correct them.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 02/01/2018 18:31

I would take it back to a charity shop or an independent shop but a large chain, probably wouldn't go to any effort to rectify their mistake for what is just a tiny drop in the ocean for them.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2018 18:32

If I had to walk a couple of miles, no I wouldn't.

Having said that, I've had it ingrained in me all my life to check my change before leaving the shop. Especially with so many fake notes around.

hungryhippo90 · 02/01/2018 18:37

Yes. I’d take it back. It would depend on their attitude when I brought it up if they got it back though.

I always, always, always point it out, one particular day I should’ve got £2 and some pence. I got the change plus a fiver.

I turned around waited back in the queue to say “I’m sorry, I think you’ve given me the wrong change”
She looked pissed off and said “no I didn’t”

I decided to take her word for it, left the shop with sweeties and more money than I went in with.

In all other instances I would make sure they got the money back as their till runs short and they need to pay it back.

Andrewofgg · 02/01/2018 18:38

Charity box and forget it.

Alpacaandgo · 02/01/2018 18:41

No, I wouldn't take it back. If it bothers you, put it in a charity box

StickThatInYourPipe · 02/01/2018 18:42

I got a fiver extra once in the Range, went back in and gave it to them. They made me wait fucking ages while they cashed up the till I had been using.
I tried to leave and Just said ‘if you think it’s wrong at the end of the day, put it in one of your charity collection boxes’ but they wouldn’t have it.
They were really shirty with me, it was like I was accusing them of short changing me, not the other way around!

I still would go back to give it by the way, but that was a complete pain in the arse!

Sweetpea55 · 02/01/2018 19:37

I wouldn't. Shop assistants should know what they're doing.

CantChoose · 02/01/2018 19:42

Probably not. But I also wouldn’t bother to go back if I’d been overcharged! So it’s laziness rather than morals!

ToadOfSadness · 02/01/2018 20:36

Was given too much change in a cafe once, handed it back and the man was really grateful, it was a £5 note.

froginapond · 02/01/2018 20:41

No. I would keep it.

cloudyweewee · 02/01/2018 20:42

I would take it back.

Minime17 · 02/01/2018 20:48

I would take it back and have done so. I have returned with £1 before...

brizzledrizzle · 02/01/2018 20:50

No, they say that they won't give the right change if you noticed it was short after leaving the shop so it works both ways. If I notice in the shop then fine but otherwise, no.
