To think there’s not much alternative to cling film?

I’m attempting to use as little plastic as possible, and I hate using cling film and plastic sandwich bags to store food, but thee seems to be a bit of a lack of other options, especially for oddly shaped things.

I’ve got glass Tupperware type storage bowls which are great, but it’s random 3/4 of a cucumber that is awkward to store. Aluminium foil is also awful for the environment... is there anything useful that actually works that I’m missing?

I’ve seen odd silicon disc-like thingies but am suspicious of them.

I use zipper bags or IKEA plastic bags that are washed & reused umpteen times.

A friend of mine makes and sells wax cloths too at beebeewraps.com/collections/all - if you live in or visit the Cambridge area she sells at craft fair things too. I didn't realise other places sell them too but I guess it makes sense.

QueenStreaky · 02/01/2018 17:00

The beeswax cloths are fab! Definitely recommend them.

I've also started using brown paper bags and they're far better than clingfilm or plastic. Much cheaper too, and definitely recyclable. I was genuinely surprised to find that food stayed fresher in paper than in plastic, nor did it smell (even a half onion kept its pong in the bag).

ATeardropExplodes · 02/01/2018 17:00

Ooooh I like those beeswax cloths!!

They are brilliant. I got two packs and have used them all already. I am making extra just to cover the leftovers up. Saddo alert.

Cucumber doesn't need wrapping - you just slice off a thin slice at the open end and carry on.

I use tupperware tubs with lids for virtually everything in the fridge. There's rarely a need to use cling film, foil or plastic bags.

It's really simple!

@Thymeout I've never bought a jacket potato that needed freezing. I just buy as normal from supermarket and keep in fridge (because I lack a 'cool dark dry place'). Why would you put jacket potatoes in the freezer?

SoupDragon · 02/01/2018 17:02

There must be alternatives to cling film because I don’t use any.

I use lock and lock type boxes. I have a huge collection!

KimmySchmidt1 · 02/01/2018 17:02

My mum uses disposable shower caps instead!!!! Grin

Moonyroony · 02/01/2018 17:11

I also use foil to wrap my dad sandwiches in - which I reuse til it's no good then put into the recycle bin. Clip & lock food containers for all other left overs and stuff

Notso · 02/01/2018 17:18

Doesn't cucumber already come in cling film?

DoubleLottchen · 02/01/2018 17:19

I never ever use cling film, but I do have a lot of tupperware-style containers of all shapes and sizes - I probably do have an ideal cucumber-sized one (though I never wrap cucumbers anyway).

I save glass jars too, and use them for more liquid things.

NewYearNewUsername · 02/01/2018 17:31

I use Tupperware type plastic boxes with lids. Washable and reusable. You can freeze them as well. I never cover salad with anything except the packaging it came in.

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 02/01/2018 20:57

You can buy frozen jacket potatoes??? Now I've heard it all.

panda we have a special onion tub, which is very well sealed so none of the smell gets out into the fridge. It lives in the fridge, even when empty so there's always somewhere ready to pop your half an onion. [preens at being such a domestic goddess]

RandomUsernameHere · 02/01/2018 20:59

A bowl with a plate on top works for things that don't need to be tightly sealed

Liara · 02/01/2018 21:01

I use glass boxes with lids. I have lots in all different sizes, so will even put half an onion in them if necessary (although will usually chop and cook the whole onion and then put half of the cooked onion in a tiny one, ready to be used when I next need half a fried onion).

Twofishfingers · 02/01/2018 21:02

if you buy cucumber that is already wrapped in plastic film, just peel the plastic back trying not to damage it too much, cut your cucumber, bring the plastic cover back over the top, voila. No need for anything.

BluebellTheDonkey · 02/01/2018 21:05

What about sandwiches in packed lunches? That's where most of my clingfilm goes...

stargirl1701 · 02/01/2018 21:06

We've been using Beeswrap for 2 years. No problems yet.

thelastredwinegum · 02/01/2018 21:23

F - have just ordered reusable bags for taking sandwiches to work instead of food bags so good to see other wraps being recommended:)

thelastredwinegum · 02/01/2018 21:26

@bluebellthedonkey I've ordered keep leaf baggies for sandwiches hoping they arrive soon so will let you know what I think.

BluebellTheDonkey · 02/01/2018 21:33

Thank you @thelastredwinegum I would appreciate that. I wonder if they'll go dry? Am only just starting to think about plastic consumption, I know I need to cut down, ao hard when everything comes wrapped in it.

Silverthorn · 02/01/2018 21:36

I just bought the beeswax infused clingcloth. Very good alternative although not recommended with meat.

ATeardropExplodes · 02/01/2018 21:37

For fact fans, if you grow cucumbers, and only need half a one, you can just slice off what you need and the cuke will heal over and can be harvested days later. You just have to slice off a sliver where it healed and you are good to go.

This stuff is great, even sticks to itself like cling film. Also fabric sandwich bags/wraps or the silicone like discs that go over cut fruit etc. There's lots of alternatives.

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 02/01/2018 21:51

You can get waxed paper sandwich bags. They can be reused if your sandwich doesn't leak and they are really good for keeping things fresh in the fridge as well

Lakeland link but they are sold elsewhere
