To not have my new TV give me a headache

I know it’s not the most riveting of subjects but my new tv claims to be “ultra HD” and it is anything but!

We have replaced our old dinosaur of a tv for this new Panasonic ultra HD 4K “ooh look at me I’m so shiny thing! and I am really disappointed with the quality.

However due to my absolute ignorance in all things techy I cannot figure out if it is the actual TV or the fact that we “upgraded” to a new sky Q box ( the engineer used existing cabling if that means anything) or both!

On our old tv non HD channels looked good while the HD ones looked great.

On our new set the non HD ones look crap, like dodgy home video from the 80’s kind of crap. And the HD ones differ from acceptable to good.

We watched an Attenborough programme in “ ultra HD” and it still wasn’t as good as normal HD on our old set.

The new tv was for the family room not the main lounge so we were not going for a really huge expensive one but I wish we had bought the cheapo ones in the supermarket for about £200 instead the £520 one we ended up paying. I can’t see how it could have been worse quality.

I have tried to fine tune it again and again but the blacks only ever appear a dark grey and the motion lag is awful.

Can anyone help my ignorance. Do I return the tv or address the new sky Q box first ?

Many thanks

Google "hdmi cable". That's what you should use to connect the new TV to the box. Does that look like the cable?

See here also:

www.sky.com/help/articles/connecting-a-new-tv-to-your-sky-q-box

If you are using an HDMI cable and are still having problems, call Sky and ask them to help you do the troubleshooting. It's very unlikely to be a fault with the new TV.

Good luck. Xmas Smile

What is the TV model?

Is it a smart TV? If so, there are 4k examples on YouTube, or on Amazon prime.

You can also try different settings to set your TV up for best accuracy - try a forums, but we really need to know what your TV is

random79 · 31/12/2017 20:13

That should read 'avforums'. For example www.avforums.com/threads/samsung-ks7000-settings-thread.2044610/

Hope that helps

If within a year then Panasonic will fix it

coursedarlin · 31/12/2017 20:42

We invested in a ‘gold’ hdmi cable and the difference is amazing. You can really notice the difference. I thought it was all a bit of a con when the man in curry’s tried to sell it to me but you really can see he difference

Humansareidiots · 01/01/2018 01:25

Thanks everyone great advice. I will look into the gold hdmi cable and educate myself on the forums.

Happy new year too x

Turn off the motion smoothing. It’s called different things for different manufacturers but that’s what gives the “soap opera effect” apparently. Did ours the other day and I can really tell. Have a google!

Why did TVs have to become so complicated? (grumble grumble).

TheClaws · 01/01/2018 02:08

You need to adjust your Picture mode. It’s called different things on different brands, but generally, they will be ‘Cinema’, ‘Sports’, ‘Day’ etc.
This link explains it for you, but you might need to tinker around in your settings to find it.

Agree with @SureIusedtobetaller look for a setting called motion control or something like that. It creates what is known as the Australian sitcom effect and makes everything look awful!
First thing we did when we first got our Samsung smart TV and hate seeing it!
