Was in a cafe in a museum today and went to help myself to a slice of chocolate loaf cake. there was only one pair of tongs (they were on the next plate of cakes) so i used them to put it on my plate.

As i went towards the till a guy who worked there said ‘excuse me, did you just use those tongs to get your cake?’ i said ‘yes...’ and he said ‘sorry you’re not to do that, those tongs are for the gluten free only cake, i’ll have to wash them now’ and whisked them away to the sink in a bit of a huff.

i did point out there were no other tongs available so he produced several pairs from under the counter.

aibu to not know you needed to use different utensils for different cakes? surely that’s a bit bonkers? (i didn’t know the cake next to it was gluten free btw, there were no signs)

rude man 😡

I started a thread recently regarding a hotel breakfast which had a gf station with separate toaster, gf bread in its wrapper, etc (so far so good) but zero policing. Several guests were blithely putting normal bread in the "gf" toaster and staff seemed unconcerned when I mentioned it.

I don't think catering establishments should claim to offer gf if they aren't able to ensure that it's actually properly gf.

I could get through about five knives making toast for one gf boy and his non-coeliac brother...

This is me, even now! None of my kids are coeliac (as yet) but I am! Separate boards/knives etc- sandwiches can be quite a mission! Grin

It took a while but my mil knows now not to contaminate the food/boards etc, and she often tells fil off if he goes to use the sand knife!

It's tiresome but important.

Anyway, I do agree that it was the cafes responsibility to inform the customers.

Brutus I remember the poor lady who you’re talking about. Up until reading her post I had no idea that a) a single crumb in someone’s coffee could have such devastating effects (I know that wasn’t what happened to her) and b) just how devastating the effects could be. I just thought it might lead to an upset tummy and I’m ashamed now that I was so blasé. I’m much more aware now though!

Ahhhhhh. The 'no double dipping' rule reins supreme in this house.

If you use a knife to take something out of a jar/tub/spread something on your bread then you only use that knife once.

For example a slice of marmite on toast.

Knife 1. Get butter out of pot
Knife 2. Cos you've just dropped knife 1 and need to spread yer butter
Knife 3. For the 'mite
Knife 4. More 'mite

Unsurprisingly I have a lot of wilko cheapies knives.

My kids are well trained! They know to use the spoon to "dollop" their sour cream/salsa on their wraps and then spread it with their own knife when we have fajitas! Grin

They all also know that mummy's pizza has to be cut first with the wheely cutter thing. Bless em.
