Yabu to not have told me this earlier

We have no lidls near us though. Gutted

Enjoy it all to yourself!

ILoveDolly · 31/12/2017 16:47

Keep it. Take something else, you'll only resent seeing it get eaten by philistines

TenancyTroublesAgain · 31/12/2017 16:50

It looks so ordinary. Seeing as everyone's raving about it I'll have to buy one and see what the fuss is about!

MummySparkle · 31/12/2017 16:55

I'm now checking opening times of our local LIDL so I can go and buy pannetone tonight Grin

Hope they haven't sold out!!

MummySparkle · 31/12/2017 16:56

Oh bollocks, it's Sunday - closed already Angry

Frigging hate this week when you have no idea what day of the week it is!

StayAChild · 31/12/2017 16:59

BusterGonad There are lots of different flavours about, but it's nothing like Madeira cake, no. It's like the most delicious hot cross buns but much lighter with very stretchy bread. It's equally nice torn and eaten without butter, or lightly toasted with butter.

lljkk · 31/12/2017 17:53

It's fruitcake. Confused
I guess I'll try it some time. Not a fan of vanilla, though.

redexpat · 31/12/2017 18:05

YANBU. Nor would you be UR to keep any of their mini marcipan stollen at home. In fact why do you need to go out at all? Stay home and binge.

SofiaAmes · 31/12/2017 21:00

It's like a brioche with raisins and candied fruit. Not too sweet. It does depend on the brand. I am in the USA and buy them from Trader Joes because they have the best. Otherwise the Italian brands are generally good.

greendale17 · 31/12/2017 21:02

Panettone is not nice

lljkk · 31/12/2017 21:38

Brioche is like tea cakes, or light raisin bread (British fruit loaf?)... I think? I have tried tea cakes and fruit loaf, but not something labeled brioche.

MIL makes a fruit cake that is very much like (American) raisin bread, except a bit more fatty, more crumbly, & less sweet/fruit.

DS likes fruit loaf so maybe we can try.

SofiaAmes · 31/12/2017 22:21

Here's a recipe with a picture. The "bread" has a little sugar, but not a lot.

goose1964 · 31/12/2017 22:22

I think we still have panettone left from about 4 years ago .I find it far to dry to eat plain ,and it goes mushy when you pour Marsala on it

usernameinfinito · 31/12/2017 22:27

It’s delicious.

I fucking hate panettone. It's dry cake with horrible peel in it. Just crap.

We get bombarded with that shit at this time of year from crafty Italian suppliers and stupid English people seduced by the rapture of Italian cuisine. Panettone is truly mediocre shit.

I'm looking at no less than 20 of them right now. Yes- that's how many of these dry naturally leavened oven baked cake we're left with after we have tried to palm them off on to people.

I'm going to give it to the ducks tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if they turned up their bills at it.

Did I say how much I hate panettone?

DivisionBelle · 01/01/2018 02:00

Limitedperiod: take it to the food bank collection box at your nearest supermarket.

Please do not feed it to ducks. Bread products are very bad for them. It isn’t the ducks’ fault you don’t like pannetone!

mathanxiety · 01/01/2018 02:44

lljkk it's a lot more tender than raisin bread, at least the stuff I buy is...

SelenaMeyer2016 · 01/01/2018 02:55

YABU - it’s a Christmas cake and you should have eaten by now.

Why not share?

Housewife2010 · 01/01/2018 10:26

Panettone isn't cake. It is a sweet bread. The Aldi one is nice but my husband made panettone this Christmas which was far superior. I think I'm going to get out of bed and toast some for my first breakfast of the year.

honeyroar · 01/01/2018 10:40

When I lived in Italy all the Italians I knew heated it up in the oven (they're usually in heatproof bags), it makes a huge difference to how it tastes, it's a bit boring cold.

I've got three in the cupboard, all were presents. I'm a bit over the stuff nowadays. I'd have gladly taken a couple to the party!

allegretto · 01/01/2018 11:06

If I have to eat it I just toast it, close my eyes and pretend it's hot cross buns.
