I have no idea where to ask for help re choosing headphones.

I know nothing about this. I looked online and was utterly confounded by the terminology.

I want two things: to be able to listen to audio in bed without disturbing dh, and to reduce the overwhelmingness of amplified sound at performances.

I don't need or want to shut out sound completely, and I don't like in-ear phones.

Can one pair do both, or do I need two different pairs? Can they be fairly light-weight and compact, or are they inevitably bulky and heavy? Where's the best place to get advice? Can I try before buying? How much £££ am I looking at?

I haven't a clue where to start, even!

Dd has Aspergers and is very noise sensitive. I got her some Philips noise cancelling headphones and she absolutely loves them.

Have a look on Amazon and read some of the reviews.

Is there a branch of Richer Sounds in your town? I cannot recommend them enough, they don't upsell and take great pride in having happy customers whether buying tens of thousands of pounds worth of audiophile kit or a pair of cheap and cheerful earbuds. Have had a few things from them over the years and they will let you test all of the kit in store.

There is a Richer Sounds Ina town near me! Thanks.

(I won't embarrass myself by sounding like a complete idiot there?)

If you go in Curry’s they have them laid out and you can plug them into your phone. Amazing how different they are.

Another vote for richer sounds, they’re super nice and helpful and their prices are always the best.

My son and DH swear by BOSE Noise Cancelling. Not a bad price either.

I love skullcandy myself. They're really light and don't block sound completely. Most comfortable headphones ever.

I doubt it very much... they seem to enjoy sharing their love of getting the best for their customers.
