Is it one book per month or as many as you can listen to? I've done a lot of research and I can't seem to find an answer... I work nights and like to listen to audio books on my break.

The basic subscription is one book a month. You can buy extra credits (I think it's about £18 for three?) and I think you can have a different subscription set up where you automatically get more than one.

TittyGolightly · 30/12/2017 20:09

Depends which package you go for. I do 1 per month. There are others though.

AcronymsForAll · 30/12/2017 20:09

Oh and you can BUY as many books a month as you want - but only one comes free a month usually.

Weezol · 30/12/2017 20:09

Watching, as I have exactly the same question. I have read the whole thing and I still can't work out what I'm getting for my money.

dingdongdigeridoo · 30/12/2017 20:09

I think you pay monthly for membership which gives you one book credit, then you pay for others. It seems a bit of a ripoff. YouTube has a lot of audio books. I like to listen to podcasts when I work too, so maybe try them? They’re free!

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 30/12/2017 20:09

I think it's 1 free book a month, but you can buy credits and use them for additional books (Or be bought credits as a gift). My dsis and I did a trial membership for our dad recently

KittiKat · 30/12/2017 20:10

Hi, here is a link that tells you.

audible-uk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5527/related/1Audible

It all depends how much you pay as to how many books you can have each month.

lidoshuffle · 30/12/2017 20:11

I get the £110 year contract - 24 books and you can roll them over - it's a lot better value if you use it a lot.

AcronymsForAll · 30/12/2017 20:11

I've used a lot of my credits on really long things, like the 70+ hours long Sherlock Holmes package, and they do have some books on good cheap deals.

I second the podcasts, though. Endless and free...

Last link did not work sorry.

Hmm Audible site is down apparently.

fleshmarketclose · 30/12/2017 20:16

I currently have a three month free trial for Kindle Unlimited so have paused my Audible membership. The best thing about Kindle Unlimited is that you can borrow up to ten Audiobooks at a time which is great if you listen a lot like I do and they play through the Audible App. I suppose it depends on what you want to listen to and how many books you will want in a month as to whether Audible is the better deal though.

Butteredparsn1ps · 30/12/2017 20:16

I’m a big fan. Is signed up when I wS pregnant for one book per month and that DC is now 8 1/2.

It’s one book a month, and you also get occasional offers of say 3 for 2 additional credits, and sometimes a free book. I probably select about 20 books per year and consider it great value.

My original idea was to listen to the books when breastfeeding, but I now listen when doing housework, commuting or suffering insomnia. DH isn’t keen on the light on at bedtime, whereas I like the downtime before I drop off, but try not to disturb him. Itworks really well.

JustKeepDancing · 30/12/2017 20:17

Worth checking your local library, as lots now have an audiobook lending service although not always as up to date with the newest books as Audible is. I really like it - I can borrow and reserve 3 at a time and they last 21 days on an app. Perfect for commuting etc.

quietlycontemplating · 30/12/2017 20:18

Brilliant I'm going to have a trial of it I think!

Weezol · 30/12/2017 20:44

JustKeep Thank you! The library sound like the best fit for my budget. I have just checked and my library offers the service. £8 just seemed a lot for one book out of my 'entertainment' fund.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 30/12/2017 20:49

I love my Audible. You can also get cheaper extra credits of eBay which is probably a bit naughty but I’ve done it.

Liz38 · 30/12/2017 20:55

We looked at it but what put us off was having to listen via an app on your phone. I wanted stuff on mp3 that i can take out running and make it less boring. Doesn't answer your question but it was something we didn't know till we signed up for a free trial.

CheekyFuckersAreEntertaining · 30/12/2017 21:12

Don't bother. I have Kindle unlimited and using Voiceview Screen Reader (found in Accessibility) I get the kindle to read to me. I use the American Female voice (Salli) and she is great! Audible is only good for the books they have recorded whereas Kindle Screen reader will read everything.

justilou1 · 31/12/2017 06:55

One book per month. You can purchase three for (I think) 18 quid.

ButDoYouAvocado · 31/12/2017 07:35

One bookna month or 2. I do 2. There is a daily book offer for £2.99, they are often good.

Not many people realise that you can actually return books and get your credit back - only online though not through the app. I've done that a couple of times when I've had a crap narrator. Rubbish accents make me twitch.

ThursdayLastWeek · 31/12/2017 07:45

I love audible.
I often buy the 'daily deal' which you have to sign up for I belive - never more than £3/4.
And they do a lot of BOGOF deals for members too.

Both the site and the app are very easy to use.

I agree about the bad accents ButDoYou but a good accent can make an audiobook absolutely wonderful.

mirialis · 31/12/2017 08:03

Oh, I really disagree! I think the narrator makes a big difference. There are some books that absolutely cannot/must be read in, say, an American accent, or in a female voice etc. Sometimes I've listened to a book and then searched for other books read by that narrator as opposed to other books written by that author because they've been so engaging - really think having a professional actor read the story makes a difference.

I've got a stack to use up now so have cancelled membership for a while, but I was on the £8 a month deal and was topping up with 3 books for £18 and the daily £3 ish deals but think next time will go for the 24 books option - especially as a pp has said you could roll books over which I didn't realise!

CheekyFuckersAreEntertaining · 31/12/2017 21:13

I've turned the narrator off on some audible books because they were bloody irritating to listen too. Ridiculous accents, kinda like your granny trying to read your usual bedtime story but getting it all wrong. Over accented or just plain rubbishy "acted". I quit my audible subscription because I found it a waste unless I liked the narrator whereas the US female screen reader has a simple, straightforward reading manner.

Madonnasmum · 31/12/2017 21:31

You can also pause your membership if you end up with a stack to read. The books take hours to listen to, so can last a month. They last longer than a reading book in my opinion. But guess it depends on how often you listen to it. I wasn't sure but am now hooked. Love it when driving, cooking and housework.
