NYE hiding pregnancy

Whattodonut · 30/12/2017 16:43

Not an AIBU but I need some help!
I'm now 8 weeks pregnant and wasn't planning on telling anyone (except my OH!) until after the 12 week scan
We have a long standing NYE tradition of dinner and staying with friends overnight nearby (10 mins driving distance). Our 4year olds are best friends and love staying together. My friend is 4 months pregnant herself. Her husband is lovely- but is a really on the ball host- topping up drinks, making cocktails etc.

I've completely run out of ideas of how to get away with not telling them the truth. We're close enough to drive home- but what excuses could we give?
Help!

I was pregnant this time last year, I told people I had a raging hangover which excused me from alcohol, looking I'll and eating for two all in one Xmas Wink

LucyAutumn · 30/12/2017 18:21

*ill

LoniceraJaponica · 30/12/2017 18:22

"don't go for the Antib excuse, everyone knows that is code for pregnant"

This ^^

Why not say you have a hangover from the night before and just can't face any alcohol?

DustyCropHopper · 30/12/2017 18:32

Going to be honest here, we had a similar set up a few years ago, friends round, New Years Eve, staying over. Wife said she wasn't drinking much as she had over indulged etc. I clocked immediately she was pregnant! So just be prepared they may work it out anyway.

Whattodonut · 30/12/2017 19:03

I'm going to take some of that alcohol free gin (for her) and then make my own drinks. Try and just do tonic as much as possible. But also previous excuses as to why not so much. But really just not drink a lot of anything.
I don't think its that unusual to not want to tell people before the scan? I'm quite a private person and if there is something wrong I'd like to be able to make decisions/ deal with it with my OH in private before sharing (if at all).

I don't mind if they guess as long as they don't ask or say anything. More than happy for them to say they'd guessed when we do tell them.
Another friend who's coming will badger me if she suspects - so I'll be avoiding her!

Antibiotics...also pregnant in the early stages! Message if you want any names of antibiotics as I'm currently on some aha

ReggaetonLente · 30/12/2017 19:16

Even if they do guess, it would be incredibly rude for them to say anything or ask you.

I'm almost 8 weeks too and I just ask for a soft drink. People can give each other knowing looks all they like!

Waterdropsdown · 30/12/2017 19:28

If they are really good friends (presume you are, as spending NYE with them) why don’t you just tell and advise it’s to go no further and you only telling them because it will be blatantly obvious otherwise.

I’ve had a friend do this in the past, much better than obviously lying!

Cheby · 30/12/2017 19:32

I would probably just tell them if it were me.

I disagree about the antibiotics excuse though; I’ve had to take metronidazole (the one that you can’t drink with) about 6 times over the last 3 years, mostly for dental infections. Fairly sure my mates have not assumed I was pregnant but lying each time I said I couldn’t have wine with dinner.

LokiBear · 30/12/2017 20:12

Buy a bottle of cheap wine. Screw cap. You are sticking to this because you cant cope eith thr headaches of spirits. Poor away the wine. Replace with non alcoholic wine. Screw the cap on tightly and take it with you. Drink it with lemonade to make it last longer. Grin

kaytee87 · 31/12/2017 07:50

Oo @LokiBear you're too clever Smile

clueless2010 · 31/12/2017 13:44

I would just pull a sickie....!

CurryWorst · 31/12/2017 13:48

Antibiotics. Always works a treat

No it doesn't. You might as well bring out a cake that says PREGNANT on it and let off fireworks.

frieda909 · 31/12/2017 14:00

I would honestly just not say anything. Good friends shouldn’t be keeping tabs on what you’re drinking, and if they suspect then they shouldn’t say anything!

Stickerrocks · 31/12/2017 14:17

Don't do it alone. Ask OH not to drink as well and say you've both stopped for the evening. That takes the focus off you. You can still have a small glass of fizz at midnight and welcome in what should be a great New year for you both.

DamsonGin · 31/12/2017 15:04

I like the idea of a dummy bottle with non alcoholic wine. Alternatively, it's there a drink only you would like?

HermionesRightHook · 31/12/2017 15:53

I would go with raging hangover myself - delicate tummy works better but then they might be needlessly upset that you've potentially exposed your pregnant friend to Noro.

Congratulations!

frieda909 · 31/12/2017 15:59

Just ask for a soft drink when you get there, if necessary you can just say ‘I think I’ll pace myself, it’s a long time until midnight!’ and then just never switch to booze.

FluffyWuffy100 · 31/12/2017 16:02

I’d probably just tell them - if they are good friends and she is also PG I’d expect them to be discreet.

Tipping away drinks is a horrible waste.

FluffyWuffy100 · 31/12/2017 16:04

Antibiotics is the worst ploy ever, there aren’t THAT many ABs where you can’t drink on them anyway.

HopefulForToday · 31/12/2017 16:12

At dh's sister's wedding last year I accepted every drink poured or bought for me. So I had a glass of arrival champagne, as did dh. Made pretend sips at it until dh's was half gone then swapped. Then swapped again when he'd finished that one. It's easy to both put your glasses on a table then pick up the wrong ones.

We did that all night pretty much and lucky for us that dh can hold his wine as he was drinking two of everything Grin although he was definitely fairly sloshed by the end.

No one suspected at all though as they just saw me with a number of drinks over the evening getting drunk and disappearing. I even made noises about my sore head the next morning.

In fact, I did a bit too well because SIL was horrified the next month that I was pg as I'd gotten 'so pissed' at her wedding.

TooGood2BeFalse · 31/12/2017 16:22

Had no idea the world was so clued up on the antibiotics excuse Blush

AustrianSnow · 31/12/2017 16:24

Say you have a UTI. No one wants to question you further then.

poisonedbypen · 31/12/2017 16:42

It's only metronidazole that you can't drink with, anyway. Other than that it's a myth/excuse. Get your DH to get your drinks & have "gin" & tonic.
