To ask if a 23 year old should be starting a levels

Ds1 who has an ehcp is going to start a new college on September. He's been at home for three years prior to this and we've recently got him an ehcp. He wants to do a level three course but obviously these our two years and he would be 25 when he finished. I've suggested an access course to him However he says this will be too much work.

A family member did A levels at that age at an FE college. She felt they were the best preparation for the degree she wanted to do.

Thanks for all responses it seems to be very mixed views!

There are simply several different routes, none right or wrong. Without knowing what he is aiming for it is hard to advise the "best" route for him.

He's aiming for a social work degree or law.

For law, I think he will be disadvantaged if he does an access course instead of A-levels if he wants to practice as a solicitor or barrister. Some legal employers are more progressive but the majority are very traditional and require good A-levels in academic subjects.

That's what I was thinking.

However he changes his mind so often.

I think the best thing is that he does what he wants to do. If he's got his mind set on it, he will enjoy it.

My humanities access course included law. However, if he wants to do social work there’s a different access course route for that one. So he needs to decide which degree he wants really as they are very different subjects.

Does the college have a careers advisor who can have a chat with him?
