To take this laptop back?

I bought a basic HP laptop from Tesco yesterday. It seemed fine to start but today I'm having problems. I can't get any videos to play without endlessly buffing, it's really slow loading Web pages and I'm getting frustrated. My other laptop works perfectly on the same Internet (as is my phone) so I'm sure it's not a problem with the Internet but the laptop. It's Windows 10 using chrome. (same set up on my other laptop which is working fine)

Take it back. The really low end laptops don't do anything well. Get one with an i5 processor, 8gb of RAM (memory) and an SSD (solid state drive). It's worth the investment in the long run.

The Dell Inspirons are very good, and so are the better HP's.

If it’s an HP14, it was on Which’s recent ‘Don’t Buy’ list “Frustratingly slow, uninspiring screen, unstable build, pathetic battery”

Foxysoxy01 · 29/12/2017 17:18

We have two HP laptops. One was decent fairly high end and still works really well (it’s also the best screen we have ever had for films)
The second is much, much slower! It was cheaper and not as all singing and dancing, although newer but it’s quite amazing how different they both are in terms of speed and ease of use!

That should say the HP Notebook 14 - Confusingly, one of Which’s Best Buys is the HP Pavilion 14-bk052sa

Oh god, DC has £270 to spend on a laptop and it's a minefield - any suggestions oh internet gurus?

And OP, yes take it back and hopefully we'll get some ideas for a better one ;)

I can't afford much more than about £200. It's this one: www.tesco.com/direct/hp-14-14-bw022na-amd-a4-4gb-1tb-black-laptop/760-8535.prd?skuId=760-8535

This is a review of the best choices at the low end:

MiltonTheChristmasCockroach · 29/12/2017 17:57

That looks like the one I have OP and mine runs okay.

Certain sites can buffer a lot at times but then I had that problem with the Dell I had previously.

Windows 10 is a bit of a bastard too. Then again all the upgrades seem glitchy to me at first.

Check if it's downloading a shed load of updates.
It would have been made before the big Windows 10 update was released in October/November and will prioritize downloading this before anything else.
Set the power settings to 'always on' and leave it switched on and plugged in overnight.

If it's still iffy when it has got all the updates on - take it back!

QuestionableMouse · 29/12/2017 18:28

A chrome book isn't suitable. I don't always have Internet access... I've seen a HP stream that I think is going to be better.

If you're using Chrome, install one of the many ad-block browser addons. My laptop has similar specs to that HP and alot of websites take forever to load these days due to all the adverts. Adblock makes it run perfectly.

BakedIllaska · 29/12/2017 18:33

Something else you can try:
ctrl+alt+del
task manager
start up tab
right click on any unnecessary programs (probably everything except windows defender) and set them so they don't run on start up.

QuestionableMouse · 29/12/2017 18:34

It's apparently fully updated, but I'll check again thanks.

I've already got adblock on chrome and it seems to be making no difference. Both laptops have the same settings (or as close as I could get them) and my older one is working so much better.

Try this:

Click on the wifi symbol in the bottom right hand corner
Click on your connection
Click properties
Scroll to metered connection
Turn it on

QuestionableMouse · 29/12/2017 20:06

Thanks, I'll try that.
