To ask for Alexa tips?

Got an Amazon Echo for Christmas. What do you guys mainly use it for? I only really use it for listening to Spotify at the moment and am struggling to find other practical uses! I’m sure Alexa can make my life easier but I’m not quite sure how, so I’m looking for some good tips!

Ask her to read stories. She personalised ours with the kids names lol

theSnuffster · 29/12/2017 21:06

We got one for Christmas too. The children have asked her to play a song, stopped her after a few seconds, asked her to play a different song, stopped her after a few seconds.... You get the idea. They've also played the 'what animal am I?' game which seems good fun.

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 29/12/2017 21:47

Enable the "ask for a fart" skill, then say "Alexa, ask for a fart". The kids will love it!

ForalltheSaints · 29/12/2017 21:53

I am sure the novelty will wear off!

rainbowduck · 29/12/2017 21:55

I have ordered one for the car (there is no way to connect my phone to the car stereo and this seemed a cheaper option that getting blue tooth installed). Am quite looking forward to it!

doxiepoxie · 29/12/2017 21:56

Watching with interest.

myrtleWilson · 29/12/2017 21:59

BarbaraOcumbungles · 29/12/2017 22:01

Alexander help me sleep....She plays loads of relaxing white noise, or rainforest sounds etc

mata777 · 29/12/2017 22:07

My friend's son (6 years old) complained Alexa only knows 3 Pokemons - Pikachu and 2 more so if you ask any Pokémon questions you won't get the right answer. Obviously needs a Pokémon update..

HeyRoly · 29/12/2017 22:20

We've had an Echo for a few weeks and Alexa is very tolerant of my six year old barking orders at her.

Brokenbiscuit · 29/12/2017 22:24

I love the ocean sounds while I'm going to sleep.

Hoping to get some more tips here on how to get the best out of alexa.

HermioneWeasley · 29/12/2017 22:28

She will gives me the weather in Fahrenheit- any idea how to get her to do C?

Brokenbiscuit · 29/12/2017 22:35

Not sure Hermione but I wanted to know that too!

MadisonAvenue · 29/12/2017 22:47

I got an Echo the other day. I've played around with it a bit and asked for some 70s music yesterday and 8 hours later it was still playing. Really want to use it to get the best out of it though.

Sedona123 · 29/12/2017 23:18

Don't use it. We've had one for 6 months (DH's - he thinks it's fab), and ours will randomly say "I'm sorry, I didn't hear that" when DS and I are talking and haven't said anything that sounds like "Alexa". 😱 Never does it when DH is around though. 🤔

MyNameIsJane · 29/12/2017 23:25

There is a FB group for Alexa users. I’ve downloaded some apps from there (IFTTT & Stringify) which help with home automation too.

Ginfiend · 29/12/2017 23:39

@Hermione you have to go into the alexa app on your phone and change the default settings eg metric or degrees c etc

Marlinspike · 30/12/2017 11:31

I've just had one delivered! I've set her up and linked her to Spotify, and she's now playing my music. Very excited!

Valerrie · 30/12/2017 12:55

@rainbowduck How will you use it in the car when it needs a constant power source and WiFi?

Mrsfs · 30/12/2017 13:00

My daughter has one, she loves lying in bed listening to audio books, listens to music, asks for jokes and facts.

user1496146479 · 30/12/2017 13:10

Anyone able to help me. Main Alexa app is set up by DH. I've downloaded the app too and have tried many times to do the add user (not my DH) but keep getting an error message!? Any ideas?

Dox · 30/12/2017 13:23

DS got one for Christmas. Biggest surprise is that it has to be plugged inConfused. Seems so basic, when most gadgets are rechargeable.

SantaTheChristmasElfSlayer · 30/12/2017 13:24

@Valerrie Most cars have USB ports these days so it can be plugged in using its cable, and you can create a hotspot on your phone which will broadcast WiFi to the dot. You'd need a good monthly data allowance, but lots of people have dots in their cars (judging by the Facebook Alexa groups I'm on) so it must work!

januaryfeminist · 30/12/2017 13:29

I have been reading and re-reading the specs for these devices. I'm normally quite techy but I can't understand, what's the difference between:

  • Echo
  • Dot
  • Alexa?

Is Alexa the voice on the Echo and the Dot? If so, what's the difference between the two?
