To try and exchange a present when I have no idea where it came from?

DD's dad has bought her a Nintendo 2DS for Christmas. She's 2, so she isn't going to be able to play it for at least 2 years. She has got a ridiculous amount of presents from everyone, and he refuses to pay maintenance (abusive, drug taker, sees her in a contact centre), and I'd prefer to exchange it for £75 worth of clothes or something she actually needs.

It's brand new. But no receipt. I can't/ won't ask him (restraining order). He did get her other age appropriate toys, and addressed everything from Santa, plus she's only two - so it's not like I'm taking away the only present her dad got her.

WIBU to take it back to the large tescos and say it was bought from here but no receipt? Would this even be possible? I don't want to sell it on Facebook or anything in case he sees.

That money could really come in handy as getting by on maintenance is pretty tough.

Have you got a CEX shop near you? They’d exchange it for cash.

Namechangetempissue · 29/12/2017 11:32

Sell it on eBay/facebook.

Namechangetempissue · 29/12/2017 11:33

Block him from seeing on facebook!

leiaorganashair · 29/12/2017 11:33

I used to work in a department store. We weren't allowed to return anything except own brand products without a receipt. Precisely because it could have been bought at another shop. I think you will get nowhere, sorry.

RedHelenB · 29/12/2017 11:34

They won't give cash with no receipt but probably will give a credit note if it is still in original packaging.

passemoilevin · 29/12/2017 11:38

We have got a CEX shop near us, maybe that's the best idea.

He is blocked most definitely! More if one of his friends saw it or he had a fake Facebook or whatever (stalking tendencies).

Can only get £30 in there it says on the website. I'll try eBay.

Take it back to Tesco they might give you a voucher they might tell you to piss off.

MrsJayy · 29/12/2017 11:44

Try cash converters you wont get £75 for it though i would go for £50.

MrsJayy · 29/12/2017 11:45

If you are seling it on ebay*

FlouncyDoves · 29/12/2017 11:56

Try it. At the end of the day they’d still have the console to sell so why not?

HermionesRightHook · 29/12/2017 12:01

Tricky one, but I don't think it would be unreasonable to be honest and ask Tesco. You think it was bought there (presuming you do!) but that as it was a gift you've no receipt. You'd be happy to accept a voucher if they would offer one.

I wouldn't lie to them but they might be perfectly happy to take it. If not then CEX is the easiest option to get a bit of cash for it. Unless you know someone you'd buy such an expensive present for? In which case you're sorted for their next birthday.

Supermagicsmile · 29/12/2017 12:04

No harm in trying Argos/Tesco etc.

kaytee87 · 29/12/2017 12:05

Gumtree?

passemoilevin · 29/12/2017 12:08

Well it came in a tescos carrier bag, he's never shopped online and would only go somewhere he could park easily. So because of that I'd say it's a pretty sure bet. I'll go and ask tomorrow, thanks everyone. Will update Smile

Put it on eBay. You will get more for it than Cex will offer.

Lorelaithe1st · 29/12/2017 12:53

Toys r us will exchange for a credit note but I don’t know if they have clothes.
