Rabbit Help

My rabbit was only 8 months old and we took him to the vets after finding him chewing his foot until it was bleeding for the vet to say he has a bone infection and we have to put him down.
They told us it was caused by plastic flooring in his cage but pets at home only have cages with plastic flooring so should they not have mentioned this when we bought him because we’re all crying now because we feel we have done him wrongly

I'm sorry for your rabbit. The cage should be lined with paper/sawdust/hay and changed daily, not left as bare plastic. We used those cages for 10 years and never had this problem.

Oh gosh :( sorry OP Flowers is there nothing the vet can do?

How sad.. is the hutch indoor or outdoor? Ours is from pets at home and has wooden flooring. Like previous poster said, line in newspaper, sawdust, hay etc and clean out regularly

ToadOfSadness · 29/12/2017 00:27

Do you know what the infection is? It might be worth seeing another vet.

If the infection can be treated or even the foot amputated it might not be the end for him. I once had a rabbit with 3 legs, not as a result of an infection, he was like it when I got him. He lived to be 10.

Don't give up on him.

Only one of the hutches sold by Pets at Home meets the minimum guidelines for a pair of bunnies (and they should always be kept in pairs, not alone). Pets at Home is a terrible chain and animal welfare doesn't factor into most of their products or the advice their staff give.

I'm sorry about your bunny. Flowers If you decide to keep rabbits again, please spend a good few days researching what rabbits really need (e.g. rabbitwelfare.co.uk/). You should be able to rely on places like Pets at Home to advise you properly, but they don't.
