AIBU - Horse riders pick up poo?

First time asking on here so here it goes!

I'm bloody fuming, we live in a fairly large town but are lucky enough to live by a lovely canal. First 1/4 mile or so is a concrete path wide enough for 2 people to walk side by side. I'm walking along this afternoon and in the distance there are some horses & a women with a buggy feeding ducks. One of the horses poo's and as normal keeps going leaving a steaming pile all over the path meaning that anyone with a pram, wheelchair etc cannot get past unless they lift over or roll straight through it. ( bushes one side & water the other side of path) this is a daily occurance and I'm totally fed up of dodging it. Surely when on a concrete pathway the riders could show some consideration to others?

YABU - what “small tool do you think I could reasonably carry to pick up a horse shit?

aloamora · 28/12/2017 09:03

? It doesn’t tend to stick. And if it does... well, take your garden hose, spritz some water on it and you’re done.

^

What about the wheelchair users ? You expect them to just carry a hose round and a bucket of water instead of horse owners cleaning up after themselves ?

froshiechipandbrickie · 28/12/2017 09:03

frosh horses shouldn’t be routinely ridden on pavements I think it’s illegal like bikes they should be on roads. They can not be ridden on footpaths either. They can be ridden on bridleways, permissive. bridle and tracks ways, byways roads etc not on footpaths or pavements.

I know, it’s bad for their joints etc. And horse shit does still end up on pavement and concrete paths...

Bearsinmotion · 28/12/2017 09:04

And what tool should I have to remove horse shit from my wheelchair? Or should I just turn around and go home because someone has made the path inaccessible?

bobstersmum · 28/12/2017 09:05

As a previous horse owner I have to say, it's not the same as dog crap, it's basically recycled grass which is why there is no law about picking it up.
Although now I am horseless and have young kids, I would probably not be happy about a pile of horse shit blocking the buggys path!
Not sure how this can be resolved unless you make horseriders carry a bin bag and a shovel around.

aloamora · 28/12/2017 09:05

Holding onto a dog. Exactly the same as holding onto a horse. This thread

Oh good so when I take out my (fictional ) massive dog I can just let it shit where it likes because if it wanted to it could pull me over on its lead when I stop to pick up poo? You couldn't possibly expect me to train it?

If you can stop and hold your horse whilst you kick shit to one side incase it spooks it shouldn't be out somewhere it could get so easily spooked.

Creambun2 · 28/12/2017 09:06

Horse riders are usually entitled upper middle/upper class idiots who don't give a shit about how their activity impacts others.

RandomUsernameHere · 28/12/2017 09:06

How can anyone possibly compare dog and horse poo??? If I trod in or pushed the buggy through horse poo I wouldn't think twice about it but dog poo is totally disgusting and dangerous and everything would have to be totally disinfected.

Devilishpyjamas · 28/12/2017 09:07

Ha ha ha ha the annual ‘why don’t Horse riders pick up their poo’ from someone who has never been near a horse in their life.

:grabs popcorn:

GrimDamnFanjo · 28/12/2017 09:08

My dad used to lie in wait for any horse manure, he'd be out with his shovel in seconds for his garden (misses point of thread).

Devilishpyjamas · 28/12/2017 09:09

Bollocks creambun - where I live horse riders are from all walks of life. I know plenty who have minimum wage jobs who own horses. Usually they’ve grown up with them and do it all themselves.

happygardening · 28/12/2017 09:10

aloamora who decides if the horse was too frightened for the rider to get off?
It’s easy to say stay at home till it’s better trained to stay calm but horses need exposure to things to learn to be calm! As flight animals they will always be unpredictable this is inevitable, no horse is bomb proof.
A pile of horse shit is significantly larger than a dinner plate my horse did 6 the other day when I was out riding (on a very muddy bridleway) where would I put it not in my pocket. Would we have to have massive poo bins for horses.

Yes I know I'm being argumentative and procrastinating by staying on this thread but I am pretty disappointed by the responses on this thread. the main argument seems to be:

My (horses) shit doesn't stink so put up with it

And

My right to use a path to get to somewhere more horsey friendly outweighs anyone else's right not to slip /wheechlair themselves into shit.

And lastly

I can't control my animal , why should I do anything different to fix the issue?

Sparklingbrook · 28/12/2017 09:10

I have been on MN for years and have never experienced a bonkers horse poo thread before. Plenty of cat poo ones but this is new for me.
Is it panning out the same as they always do? It's riveting stuff. Grin

Frillyhorseyknickers · 28/12/2017 09:11

Bearsinmotion

It’s horse shit, it’s so inoffense it’s a complete non issue. I refuse to believe it gets “stuck” in the threads of your wheelchair and you’re just creating an argument for arguments sake.

Regardless, we will never be made to pick horse shit up - I can remember when people were a little bit better educated and less bone idle they would run out of their homes to pick shit up for their gardens.

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 28/12/2017 09:11

All these riders who can’t control a horse or cant get up and down from a horse, makes me wonder how they are allowed out in a public place with a 500kg animal they can’t handle!

This really fucks me off. Horse owners thinking that their right to ride their horse wherever they like regardless of other people, piss me off too. As for the argument 'they're nervous creatures, they might bolt' - ok then, why are you taking it out if it's so nervous?
I always slow right down to go past horses and their riders. Usually get a wave, although on more than one occasion I have had a glare from a rider, I presume because I dared to drive my car on the road that was built for cars.

Devilishpyjamas · 28/12/2017 09:13

TBH if I was on a bridle way when I had young kids they were either in an all terrain pushchair (which would easily handle horse poo) or in a rucksack on my back). The reality of wheelchairs is not that many would handle a bridleway narrow enough to be blocked by horse poo.

happygardening · 28/12/2017 09:13

frosh it’s got nothing to do with their joints it’s against the law. Actually I believe the jury is now out on the joint thing, police horses driving horses are regularly ridden on roads and as far as I’m aware have no higher incident of joint problems that normal horses.

Ollivander84 · 28/12/2017 09:14

I can get on but I need something to stand on due to spinal surgery and also it's better for my horses back not to get on from the floor
There seems to be this obsession that everyone riding a horse is middle/upper class and a snob which is bonkers. I started by begging rides as a kid, working in exchange for rides and I currently work as a care support worker. Hardly upper class

Rucksack with this in it... hold the reins with one hand, use your foot and hand to shove the poo to the side of the path.

ARudeAwakening · 28/12/2017 09:15

@Scabbersley - well done on demeaning mental health issues, very clever of you Hmm

RavingRoo · 28/12/2017 09:15

bridleways aren’t designed for pedestrians in mind, only horses / riders. If someone is stupid enough to take a puschair on a bridleway they can handle some poo.
