AIBU - Horse riders pick up poo?

First time asking on here so here it goes!

I'm bloody fuming, we live in a fairly large town but are lucky enough to live by a lovely canal. First 1/4 mile or so is a concrete path wide enough for 2 people to walk side by side. I'm walking along this afternoon and in the distance there are some horses & a women with a buggy feeding ducks. One of the horses poo's and as normal keeps going leaving a steaming pile all over the path meaning that anyone with a pram, wheelchair etc cannot get past unless they lift over or roll straight through it. ( bushes one side & water the other side of path) this is a daily occurance and I'm totally fed up of dodging it. Surely when on a concrete pathway the riders could show some consideration to others?

Menthol I don’t think it’s protecting the horses so much. It’s just that horses here don’t tend to get the same daily exposure as they are still largely ridden in rural areas.

I have seen horses spook far more at plastic bags, cows and people popping up randomly than cars though.

Eve · 28/12/2017 10:00

Pinkponies- could you vote Tory when you are at it, you stuck up , entitled, middle class, rich moron .... did I miss any other crass sweeping generalisations there that have been flung at horse owners on this thread??

Scabbersley · 28/12/2017 10:01

If you can't lift your buggy over a dinner plate you shouldnt be on paths designed for horses.

Mustang27 · 28/12/2017 10:01

Yabu what would my dogs eat and roll in on their walks opWink lol.

The manure bum bag seems like a good idea. I have plenty of friends that own horses but never discussed this with them so I dunno how they would feel about it.

Bearsinmotion · 28/12/2017 10:02

We had a disabled wheelchair user complain last week about the state of the access on a footpath on our land

Fucking wheelchair users and their lying, exaggerating sense of entitlement!

Devilishpyjamas · 28/12/2017 10:02

Yeah but flying my point is 30mph is too fast for those sorts of lanes. TBH I haven’t seen motorcyclists going too fast on the lanes I am thinking of - I think the majority of people are sensible and considerate.

Scabbersley · 28/12/2017 10:03

It is absurd to complain about a footpath across a field in the countryside having shit on it, wheelchair user or not.

Bearsinmotion · 28/12/2017 10:03

If you can't lift your buggy over a dinner plate you shouldnt be on paths designed for horses

Do you know what a wheelchair is Scabbersley?

BattleaxeGalactica · 28/12/2017 10:03

Horse shit threads are the best Grin

In answer to OP's question, no, YANBU but it ain't never gonna happen all the time horses shit rose petals and rainbows.

Pinkponiesrock · 28/12/2017 10:04

colours I’m not for a second saying that someone shouldn’t be riding if they can’t get on and off easily but I don’t think they’d be in a position of being in sole control of a horse in the situation the OP describes.
I’m well aware we have some incredibly talented Paralympic riders, they ride beautifully and are incredibly capable but many of them recognise they need help to get on and off!
I wouldn’t take a young horse on a very busy road as it wouldn’t feel safe and it wouldn’t be fair on other road users, I would choose somewhere more suitable.

Whizbang · 28/12/2017 10:04

YANBU at all OP. The argument seems to be that it would be inconvenient for the rider to pick up their animal's crap. So what!!!

Scabbersley · 28/12/2017 10:04

They have just sprayed the fields behind my house with liquid shit, all over the field and the footpath that goes across it. Horse and cow Shit is good for the earth. Get over yourselves

Bearsinmotion · 28/12/2017 10:05

t is absurd to complain about a footpath across a field in the countryside having shit on it, wheelchair user or not

But not a concreted shared use path, WHICH IS WHAT THE OP IS ABOUT!

Devilishpyjamas · 28/12/2017 10:05

I wouldn’t expect any footpath across a field to be wheelchair accessible. The only one I can think of was specially built (& has wild ponies). It’s like beaches. Also not regular wheelchair accessible.

Scabbersley · 28/12/2017 10:06

God forbid it would be inconvenient for people to lift up a buggy or wash their wheels off when they get home (a twice daily occurrence here)

Honestly its a miracle that the human race has lasted as long as it has

No problem. Thank you for taking the time to explain.

grannytomine · 28/12/2017 10:06

I live on the edge of a small town, to get to some places (school pick up for GC) I drive down a lane that is narrow with stone walls on each side. If you meet a pedestrian they have to move right to the side of the lane and you edge past. I don't know why people ride horses down there and then get annoyed about cars passing at school coming out time. I swear two women do it deliberately to cause chaos and if there horses poo in the road there is no way you can avoid it without hitting a wall unless they kindly do it right in the middle of the road but as someone else said horses don't seem to do one neat poo or do these ignorant women specifically train there horses to make as much mess as possible. It is also difficult for mums to get past it with a buggy. I see them at school with the evidence all over the buggies, don't think they deliberately choose to get their child's buggy in that state.

If I am using the lane at other times it is even more fun when they bring a child out on a nervous horse that clearly shouldn't be on the road due to its behaviour or at the very least should be ridden by someone experienced enough and strong enough to control it.

I have yet to meet a pram or wheelchair not able to span a fucking dinner plate? Indeed and if you have a nice tray underneath to carry your shopping it gets totally ruined.

justjobamb · 28/12/2017 10:06

Haha theres no comparison between dog poop and horse poop! Horses is harmless dogs is gross and toxic im sure you would rather step in horses than dogs anyday!
I have never stopped to pick up my horses poo while riding more likely to cause an accident doing so esp on a narrow path
If horse nappies worked that would be the best invention ever! Mine would be in them 24/7 but they are the most stupid invention and again more likely to cause accident horses have a mind of their own however well trained! Im sure people assume they are like bikes when they see them out on the roads, paths etc forget they are unpredictable animals!but thats a diff post Wink

CasperGutman · 28/12/2017 10:07

Not read the whole thread, but a lot of people have said that horse manure isn't an issue on bridleways. Erm, you do know bridleways aren't only for horses, don't you? They're just a type of path that horses (and cyclists) are allowed on in addition to pedestrians.

Exactly like the canal towpath!

froshiechipandbrickie · 28/12/2017 10:08

If you can't lift your buggy over a dinner plate you shouldnt be on paths designed for horses

Do you know what a wheelchair is Scabbersley?

But you’re on a path designed for horses....

Pinkponiesrock · 28/12/2017 10:08

eve excuse me, although I’m a horse owner i can’t deny that if you read the full thread you’ll see I’m actually siding with the OP!
If my horse pooped on a narrow path I’d be off and have it cleared away the best I could.
Yes I’m horse owning, no idea if I’m middle class, doubt it, but that’s a pretty sweeping accusation!

aloamora · 28/12/2017 10:08

I have stayed on a farm a few times and the cows never crossed roads so I guessed that's why it surprised me that it isn't rare! As you can tell I haven't lived in the country. I would argue though IF a cow shit is a hazard though it's a bit different since cow farming isn't a hobby it's making a living. Also cows are in countryside not urban areas , horses span both . And when I've visited country I've seen signs warning me of livestock crossings - that alerts a motorcyclist of potential dangerous cow poo whereas horses go further than the road outside their riding school.

If a horse shit the size of a dinner plate isn't perfectly in the middle of a path can you really not see how a wheelchair cannot always go round it? And ignoring that for a second , why should a partially sighted person have to put up walking through it?

I think what's got my backup about this thread isn't country living being a bit smelly and expecting a sanitised world. It was the early responses of :
Why should I be considerate of other road users with my smelly pet?
And the instant indignation at the idea of training a horse to use a poop bag. Or training a horse to tolerate their rider having to stop to kick poop to one side.

Yet another example of the country side being made to run by metropolis rules. It is not neat and clean it is a working environment not a rural Disneyland.

How many horses being ridden down towpaths or around the countryside are actually working?

Frillyhorseyknickers · 28/12/2017 10:11

shared use path

That’s the key here. If it’s shared use and horses are permitted there, you have to be reasonably prepared for horse shit. Whether you choose to span it like a reasonable human being, lift your pram over it, or drive through it because let’s face it - it’s fucking harmless, is at your discretion.
