To not preheat my oven?

passemoilevin · 27/12/2017 22:04

Just did a BuzzFeed quiz that said 96% of people preheat their oven. Shock

Genuinely shocked. I just chuck it in for an extra 5 minutes. Does it really make a big difference?

Acrylamides are compounds formed during heating. More of an issue in deep fried products like crisps.
They are potentially cancer causing, but there is currently no legal limit and no agreement on how much, over what period of time would be a problem. If indeed, it would be a problem.
As PP mentioned, toxin forming bacteria are the ones you want to worry about. If you have e.g. a chicken with salmonella, as long as you reach core temperature on the chicken at some point, doesn't really matter how long it takes, you're going to kill it off.
E.Coli or Staph Aureus gently warmed in an oven as it heats, form toxins. Toxins are not destroyed by heat. Might not do any harm, but then you only have two kidneys to fail. Worth the risk?

I don’t see how it’s mucb of an effort to pre heat.

Wander into kitchen.
Turn oven on.
Get food from the fridge or freezer.
Tell the cat that it isn’t her dinner time.
Try to find the right tray for what you want to cook.

Trip over cat.
Open a new bottle of wine.
Put stuff on the tray.
Pour more wine.
Oven is heated. Boom.

I have a double oven - the manual says to preheat the non-fan oven and don't need to for the fan unless baking bread products.

DownstairsMixUp · 27/12/2017 23:12

No, life’s too short to wait for food

SheepyFun · 27/12/2017 23:16

Always for a roast, if I remember for baking (I'm often doing it with DD, so there are plenty of distractions) and pretty much never for anything else, especially freezer food. We have a gas oven which is fairly quick to heat up except to very high temperatures (e.g. the roast).

karen2808 · 27/12/2017 23:26

I am in my 40's and unless baking cakes I have never pre heated. I just add 10 mins or so to the cooking time.

DramaAlpaca · 27/12/2017 23:27

I always pre-heat. It only takes about 5 minutes.

ProseccoMamam · 27/12/2017 23:35

I literally never preheat the oven

The food still cooks, and tastes nice and any germs that were breeding will die from the heat anyway Confused

Who really has time to preheat an oven

Of COURSE you should preheat your oven when cooking/baking something.

That is basic common knowledge. Confused

Preheating an oven is especially important with baking when you use yeast, baking soda and baking powder as leavenings – which react to heat.Food also cooks faster in a preheated oven – you've got the right temperature from the get-go and your dish can start cooking immediately and properly.

And read THIS article.

Never bother with general cooking and haven’t fucked anything up yet.

Always preheat for baking, but that’s because I’m shit at it and need it not to go wrong.

booellesmum · 28/12/2017 00:11

If I'm at home I preheat.
If I go out on a Sunday I leave the roast in the cold oven with the timer set and give it an extra 15 mins. Never noticed the difference with a roast.

LoniceraJaponica · 28/12/2017 00:15

"Genuinely shocked."

I'm shocked that you don't. The type of foods that I cook in the oven require a preheated oven.

kmc1111 · 28/12/2017 00:26

Depends on what I'm cooking. Anything where the temperature really matters (cakes, pastry and anything particularly nice I don't want to fuck up) I pre-heat, things like frozen chips, pizza etc. I don't bother.

abitoflight · 28/12/2017 00:43

Only for baking

TabbyMumz · 28/12/2017 10:26

Never preheated my oven in my life. Life is too short. Food is always fine.

Eilasor · 28/12/2017 11:12

I do, but only for 5 minutes, rarely until the oven is at temperature unless I forget about it.

DH will not put food in the oven if it isn't at the correct temperature. Even frozen oven chips. He cooks things for exactly the specified times as well, though. So annoying. (But probably why he is the far better cook).
