Scared I’ve overdosed baby

14 week old has caught a terrible cold from me.
I gave her baby nurofen at 4 pm and she’s still feeling poorly. Just gave her calpol at 7.20 pm. I thought it would be okay but now I’m scared! 111 call answer waiting time is 23 minutes and I’m scared! Have I hurt my baby?

Glad you've stopped panicking!
Both safe together, alternate more for pain.
Just leave the correct times for each one, ie 4 hours for calpol.
The nurofen is best given with food though.

You’re fine. Alternating them is what you’re supposed to do.

Having a child can be a very scary experience ime. But I honestly believe you’ll be fine.

You gave your DC the right dosage, you’re making sure that what you did certainly won’t harm your DC etc...

If you do think that your DC needs a doctor: please trust your gut. You may be inexperienced but you’re the mother. And whilst wasting a doctor’s time should obviously be avoided... Going once too often is better than staying home when your DC would have needed to go.

Ask 111 for advice, they’ll be able to tell you what to do.

Really. Have a deep breath Flowers

Just to reiterate, you are doing great!

I was in your situation a few years ago, things have got so so much better for me. I'm sure they will for you too, here's to a brilliant 2018 for you and your baby Wine

MrsDeltaB · 27/12/2017 20:28

Sweetheart. I still vividly remember the fear nearly 10 years ago when my baby had her first vaccination. They said 2.5 of calpol. DD1 was so so distraught and I was distracted I filled the syringe- 5ml. When I realised I was hysterical (PFB! Smile) and rang the surgery.

Whilst very reassuring to a first time Mum and I was 30 they also said it would take almost the full bottle in one go to even hint to overdose. (Am not willing to test that theory!).

What I'm trying to say is as all others, don't worry. You've done the right thing in being aware of it, it's something you won't ever do again as it was a lesson learned but a lesson with no poor outcome.

I worked 20 years in pharmacy. Giving paracetamol and ibuprofen together was what we recommended when tots were very poorly. You have died your child ok.

You can give both at the same time as a starter, then follow the instructions (every 4 hours etc)

mooglycrunch · 27/12/2017 20:36

When I went with to A&E with DS when he was 14 months the Dr gave him both Nurofen and Calpol at the same time. I questioned it and he said it was fine. The separating of doses of different drugs by 2 hours was only recommended to see if one worked and you didn't need the other. In fact he said if the were ill and uncomfortable it was best to give both together.

Chimera246 · 27/12/2017 20:36

Just to add another voice (I have a degree in medicinal chemistry).

Those two drugs together are fine. As others have said, one reason for the advice to seperate doses by a few hours is so that you get full 'coverage'.

For example, a child has a fever. Calpol dose is 2.5mil every 4-6 hours but it wears off after 3. You can safely give Neurofen after 3 hours. By the time the Neurofen wears off, you can safely give calpol again.

Giving them both together is absolutely fine.

You're doing great.

moshimonsters123 · 27/12/2017 20:39

course you ain't. dont get me wrong, i wouldnt advise it but you'd know. don't panic and be cautious in the future xx

Xihha · 27/12/2017 20:43

Don't panic. My oldest was very ill as a baby, the doctor was alternating nurofen and calpol at 2 hour gaps between for over a week, your baby will be fine.

And don't apologise either, you have a 14 week old baby, doesn't matter if you are 18 or 38, it's your first baby and you will panic and second guess yourself because you are a good mum and you care, its natural. x

brizzledrizzle · 27/12/2017 20:44

It's fine to alternate the two or even give them together as they are, as others have said, different drugs. Relax and cuddle your lovely baby

brizzledrizzle · 27/12/2017 20:45

Another thing, when I was tired with a newborn I'd get a bit of paper and write the times and doses he could have for the next 24 hours so I didn't have to worry about working it out each time. Hth.

buttercup54321 · 27/12/2017 20:55

Don't worry its fine to give both. Are you okay? Not nice being in a refuge with a young baby. Sending hugs xxx

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/12/2017 22:50

Another tip - syringe the medicine slowly towards the inside of her cheek rather than towards her throat. She is less likely to spit it out and there is less chance of it making her cough. ( or in DS2’s case vomit over me!)
You are doing well. Trust yourself.
