Nappies in the kitchen bin

Over the course of Christmas we've visited, and been visited by my sister and her family. My DN is 2 and obviously in nappies.
Both at hers, and ours, I've noticed a pile of soiled (varying degrees) nappies going into the kitchen bin and staying there for however long it takes the bin to get full.

Now I'm a bit weird about bins, never put anything wet in them, taken out every day etc... But I find keeping soiled nappies inside the house, in the kitchen bin, repulsive!
AIBU? Would I quickly get over it if I had kids if my own?

Kitchen bin here unless they have a dodgy stomach so extra stinky. But our bun goes out everyday anyway.

Before having kids I planned on every nappy in a sack and outside. That lasted all of about 4 hours Grin

In someone elses house I would probably put them outside though

hazeyjane · 26/12/2017 21:55

Saying that, now it's cold and we have the multi fuel stove on every day I tend to throw the really shitty ones on the fire and incinerate them.

Yikes, don't they reek when they are burning?!

(we do all nappies outside in bin by back door then transferred to wheelie bin)

Looneytune253 · 26/12/2017 21:57

Wet in the kitchen bin (which is actually kept just outside in the outhouse) soiled go straight into bags and into outside bin.

TheLegendOfBeans · 26/12/2017 21:59

Plops chucked in loo, all nappies bagged and kitchen binned (kitchen bin is emptied about 400 tines a day at the moment)

Allthetuppences · 26/12/2017 22:03

Poo should be going down the toilet ya filthy animals! Wet nappies are held in whatever chemical that toxic gel stuff is.

pastabest · 26/12/2017 22:04

Nah it's a really really hot fire and I shut the doors until it's completely burnt up. Never smelt a thing.

A friend saw me do it and tried to do the same, apparently doesn't work unless the fire is REALLY hot Grin

Ours went in the kitchen bin (in a nappy sack) if changed downstairs. We don't have a wheely bin - like a PP our binmen only take rubbish which is in a tied binbag, so can't put nappies directly into outside bin or they'll be left in the bin. And anyway I had a baby and toddler to supervise, going out into the front garden after every nappy change wasn't practical or safe.

I don't remember the kitchen ever smelling of poo. We have a good bin with a well fitting lid and always wrapped up the nappy well and then put in a tied nappy bag. Mostly that was enough to contain the smell. The odd really foul nappy (the teething ones generally) got put into the nappy bin upstairs:

bendywindy · 26/12/2017 22:23

i put my son's in our kitchen bin. as that gets taken out a lot quicker than the 'nappy' bin which has been declared defunct as now he's older the stench is tooo terrible if not emptied every day. I'm not taking every nappy out to our bin I'm looking after an 8mo here as if i have time for that! he'd have to come with me for a start (his rulesHmm) and it's really hard to open a black bin and put nappy/anything in with only one hand. like impossible without getting v bin juicy then having to wash hand, all whilst holding the unputdownable 8mo.

MichaelFabricantsHair · 26/12/2017 22:27

Been a long time since mine were in nappies but poo was flushed down the toilet, nappy into nappy bag and straight outside to bin. The thought of shitty nappies festering in a kitchen bin makes me feel sick Grin

Whitecurrants · 26/12/2017 22:29

Does nobody use Sangenic any more? I never put nappies in my kitchen bin and don’t let anybody else do it either.

bendywindy · 26/12/2017 22:30

actually i think it's a bit horrific to bag each nappy individually (wasteful). as if they aren't bad enough already!

bendywindy · 26/12/2017 22:30

i only use bags when out and about/at other people's houses

Mustang27 · 26/12/2017 22:43

I put poopy nappies straight outside I empty my bins every two days so wet ones I don't mind they don't really smell. I have a very sensitive sense of smell so if I could smell wet ones they would go straight out but Iv not noticed. I'm hoping I'm not being to gross Blush

ItsChristmoose · 26/12/2017 22:50

Gosh people's anxiety and hand wringing about so many things on here really highlights how hard everyday life is for many people. It must be exhausting!

Littlecaf · 26/12/2017 22:50

2 yr old & 13 wk old here - all wee ones go in kitchen, poos straight outside. Kitchen bin emptied every evening.

We had a proper nappy bin when DS1 was younger - emptied every other day so kitchen bin more frequent now. Tbh I couldn’t be arsed with the Faff of emptying ye another bin.

Obvs if in someone else’s house, I ask first or just take away with me.

MichaelFabricantsHair · 26/12/2017 22:53

You wouldn't bag your own crap up and pop it in the kitchen bin; shit is shit, regardless who it came from Grin

Babababababybel23 · 26/12/2017 23:00

I have a small bin next to the babies changing table. I take it out everyday and nappies go in nappy sacks first. I just couldn't put them in the kitchen. Dh does it and it drives me insane

Lilymoose · 26/12/2017 23:03

Such a lot of unnecessary plastic going in bins by the sound of it, quite bad for the environment really.

Runningoutofusernames · 26/12/2017 23:07

Seriously? Agree that poo should be going down the toilet anyway and plenty of kitchen bins get emptied every day or so, can't see what the issue is if smell doesn't spread, hands are washed. I don't but used to in a small upstairs flat. People make their lives so much harder than needed!

RainyDayBear · 26/12/2017 23:09

It all goes in the kitchen bin here if we’re downstairs, it generally gets taken out every other day, and the bin isn’t near any food preparation surfaces. Can’t say I’ve lost any sleep over this!

Summergarden · 26/12/2017 23:58

I had to ask our cleaning lady not to empty the bathroom and nappy bins into the kitchen bin. I couldn’t understand why she even started doing it, other than it was easier for her than to empty it outside into the wheelie bin.

anothernetter · 27/12/2017 00:04

When I visit my mum and dad I often change the baby downstairs. If it's a poo nappy it always goes straight into the wheelie bin but if it's just a wet nappy (and especially if it's not very nice outside) then it often goes in the kitchen bin.

anothernetter · 27/12/2017 00:05

They empty their bin daily though. I wouldn't do it otherwise.

ferrier · 27/12/2017 00:11

Putting nappies on the doorstep or in the front porch is imo more rank than putting them in a sealed nappy bag in the kitchen bin.

WickedLazy · 27/12/2017 00:14

When ds was still in them, I put nappies in the outside bin, (wet and dirty). In other people's houses, I asked where the outside bin was/could I throw them in.
