For ds to travel one hour and 15 minutes without there be any traffic to college three days per week.

How old are they? Realistically that'll be an hour and a half at the very least on public transport. Is he reliable with bus passes and bags and things? Is he going to be able to keep himself occupied? How long a day at college is that?

User700800 · 26/12/2017 12:46

It will be a taxi transport so no issue with regards to public transports.

My DS does exactly this. It’s a pain, he gets up early and it costs a lot, but it’s a course he really enjoys and he travels with a mate so it’s not too bad.

Ideally he’d like to drive rather than bus it, as it would take half the time, but it would cost a lot more in fuel in his car and go over his allowed mileage for his insurance, so he’s stuck with it.

We did discuss it before he applied and he accepted that he’d waste a lot of time travelling and to try and do something constructive on the bus. I doubt he does!

Also worth noting that one day he finishes at lunch time so is home in good time, so only two full days. He also works 3 days a week and has an early start then too, so he’s used to it and gets to bed early.

It doesn't sound too awful; my DS has a 90 minute journey and is not unusual at his school, ; 12 hours out of the house.

Darthvadersmuuuum · 26/12/2017 12:54

How old is your DS and does he have any SEND?

User700800 · 26/12/2017 13:09

He's 18 and yes he has Sen

I travelled longer for sixth form college.

Bobbins43 · 26/12/2017 21:38

Does he mind being in cars? My son also has SEN (he's v young tho) and loves transport but would find that amount of time difficult.

User700800 · 26/12/2017 21:50

He gets more stressed about not having time to himself. I'm worried about it taking longer at those sorts of times due to school pick ups and hitting the rush hour traffic on the way into our town.
