Or are Tesco perfectly within their rights to do this? Doesn't seem fair though!!

I shopped in Tesco yesterday & their pineapples were 99p each, there were loads of them! They are 83p in Lidl but I just chucked them in along with the shopping anyway as I couldn't be bother going to Lidl.

Anyway, they had passionfruit at 24p each, so I got 2 of those also. I remember commenting to dh that they were big passionfruit compared to the 4 pack that were 99p.

Anyway, I had visitors last night & made them tea, including a huge fruit salad so I used the pineapple & passionfruit.

I went back to Tesco this morning to buy more & their pineapples were all gone! Even though there were loads yesterday! But that was OK, I asked the lady & she said after the offer is over they take them out of stock for a while & then reintroduce them at a higher price. There hadn't been a sign saying they were on offer, but I accepted that they must have been to have sold so quickly.

Anyway, the whole point of the post... the passionfruit today were 49p!!! EACH And the 4 pack were £1.49!! There definitely wasn't a sign up saying they were on offer! They were twice the price each of what they were yesterday!

I remember reading an article in the paper a while back about Tesco putting their fruit up before they reduced it, so customers thought they were getting a bargain, but this is the first time I have ever seen this first hand! I was so shocked, I went to Lidl of the pineapples & have done without passionfruit!

Maybe I am being petty & this is how it works all the time though!!

Unfortunately, its perfectly legal. They can adjust the prices however they like.. the only rule is, if they advertise something as being "on offer" it has to have been retailed at the higher price for a specific length of time.

fireflyfairy2 · 23/04/2007 16:38

Oh. There wasn't even a sign saying the passionfruit were on offer & because I have never bought them before, I was unaware that they were cheap!

Oh well. My own fault I guess. But, it's not fair really is it, that they can jump the prices up so much in the space of a few hours!

Tescos had an ad on the TV last night saying something like fruit and veg are going be half-price from now until the end of 2007 to help us all 'get our five a day'.

I bet they put something else up to compensate though.

NadineBaggott · 23/04/2007 16:48

hmm there used to be a law that you couldn't increase the price on current stock only on new but don't knwo whether this applies to food

fireflyfairy2 · 23/04/2007 16:59

Chocolateface, the article I read a few weeks ago said this:

[not these words but I will parrotphrase]

Tesco have apples on sale for £1.99

Monday the 7th they put the apples up to £2.99

Monday 14th they put the price of the apples down to £1.99 again.

They claim you are saving £1.00 which is a lie as they had always been £1.99 apart from the week they raised the prices, before they lowered them again.

That was the gist of the article in the paper.

arent they reducing 5 different fruit and veg each week in rotation.

its very comman for shops to dothis. at safeway, one week something would be half price the next week the same item will be on bogof

chocolattegirl · 23/04/2007 17:05

Misdee- that sounds more likely.

fireflyfairy2 · 23/04/2007 17:06

Yeah, it probably is common, but I never pay that much attention. Just was a bit shocked that there had been no signs saying they were half price & then for them to be double the price today sorta shocked me! The 4 pack wasn't half price though, as it was 99p yesterday & £1.49 today.

On a similar note, I went to halfords yesterday to get a new bike for ds, I didnt buy it because it was going to be a week before they had time to build it, so got a strop on. Went to buy the same bike at a differnet branch today and it was £30 more. I queried it and was told that the price had gone up this morning because it was going on sale in a few weeks-how stupid is that!, but he did agree to sell it to me today but phone me and refund the difference when it goes on sale!

MrsWho · 23/04/2007 19:02

You are supposed to check the prices at Tesco atm as the computer system keeps getting them wrong and if they overcharge you , you can claim double the difference back.

Blu · 23/04/2007 19:08

Can I ask how many pineapples you were thinking of buying, Fireflyfairy?

zippitippitoes · 23/04/2007 19:21

I read it as they were doing a revolving price thing so that each week a certain number of fruit and veg would be "half price" and then the next week different ones

I thinkm the answer is just buy what you are happy to pay at the time

they alwyas have loss leaders but it's swings and roundabouts really

zippitippitoes · 23/04/2007 19:23

the bike thing is the sold in x number of stores at this price in the period xx/xx to xx/xx for sale prices to be legal

it is nonsensical see below for deciding whether to pay or not

they obviously had a job lot of cheap pineapples

SueW · 23/04/2007 19:31

Didn't you see last week that inflation going well over its target was partly put down to furniture stores raising their prices in anticpation of putting them down for Easter 'sales'?!!!!!

fireflyfairy2 · 23/04/2007 19:34

I was going to buy lots Blu

I follow sw plan & pineapples are a speed food

Zippi, I do agree with what you are saying.

I guess I was just puzzled as they had been 24p yesterday & then 49p today, without a sign up or anything. But that's probably how it works all the time & I never notice. I only noticed as Lidl had the pineapples on offer & I wanted to try passionfruit as I hadn't noticed it before
