Rooster crowing from 4.30am

LilaGrace · 26/12/2017 06:23

Staying with family over Christmas. On both mornings (Christmas Day and today) a rooster has started crowing from 4.30am. It crows a few times, stops then starts again half an hour later. Surely this isn't acceptable? We are in a built up area, no farms nearby. Any advice welcome 😩

YANBU. We encountered the same last year (also a built up area). It was far away enough from us that it didn't actually disturb us, but I could hear it if I went outside v early. Must have driven the immediate neighbours mad. It lasted about 2 months and I haven't heard it since, I genuinely would not be surprised if someone had crept in and wrung its neck.

BakedBeeeen · 26/12/2017 06:29

Earplugs.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 26/12/2017 06:36

Wring its neck, it will be very tasty in a nice curry Grin

LilaGrace · 26/12/2017 06:37

Superking- that's exactly what I feel like doing and it's only been 2 days!
Earplugs might work for some, but I've never been able to use them- too uncomfortable. But it's my kids I'm most worried about waking- yesterday the rooster woke up my 4 yr old.

I wonder if who you are staying with have a clause on their restrictive covenants on their deeds saying if they must not keep chickens/cockerels on the land... could be handy for the neighbours lol

Lillybilly20 · 26/12/2017 08:47

Oh peoples bloody dogs wake me up with early morning barking. What’s the difference? I much prefer the sound of a cockerel than an annoying barking dog

LilaGrace · 26/12/2017 09:08

At 4.30am Lilly?

Coq au vin

MockneyReject · 26/12/2017 09:16

I'm woken up at least hourly, by church bells (they sound every 15 minutes).
In my last place it was ducks, before that, birds.

Surely, most of us live near to something potentially disruptive. Or maybe I've just been especially unlucky with neighbours? I've lived by a busy A&E depot, so frequent police/ambulance sirens, supermarket loading bays, trains and just general noise of life going on around me. I actually find it reassuring.

You can't outlaw wildlife, though, and organised religion gets a free pass (on noise pollution, as it does in many other aspects).

I would guess that locals just get used to it. Or that they use earplugs (the pastor here offered me some in expectation of the call to Midnight Mass!) Could you try that while you're there, OP?

Scrowy · 26/12/2017 09:19

It's one of those things you get used to if it's a common occurrence.

It is on the early side for winter months, but sometimes they do it if a cat/fox etc is passing by.

It's no different to being disturbed by more usual urban noises like a car backfiring / motorbike passing or a dog barking though you are just noticing it more because it is an unusual noise to you.

kaytee87 · 26/12/2017 09:21

Weird, I thought roosters crowed Just before sunrise.
It's annoying but not sure what you can do about it.

Chickencellar · 26/12/2017 09:21

Our neighbors have dogs never heard them at 4.30am. I would hate being woken at that time. Speak to the council , noise pollution.

LilaGrace · 26/12/2017 09:38

Usually, dogs barking early have been let out by their owners for a few mins and come straight back in. I have never heard a dog at 4.30am though. A rooster isn't wildlife- it's being kept as a pet and is a source of noise nuisance. Foxes are wildlife- we get those near our house and there's nothing we can do about that.

MockneyReject · 26/12/2017 10:21

I wasn't suggesting that the rooster is wildlife, just giving other examples of noise pollution and things that have worked for me.

akindofmagic · 26/12/2017 10:48

We have a cockerel in a built up area, although we are on the edge of the estate next to a heath. At night he goes to bed in a large hutch with a girlfriend in our garage. He’s not particularly noisy, but keeping him in at night stops him disturbing anyone.

Firesuit · 26/12/2017 11:01

Weird, I thought roosters crowed Just before sunrise.

When if first visited PIL, who lived in a remote rural area, I commented about their rooster crowing in the middle of night. I was told that every time there were car headlights going around the corner of the nearest road, he thought it was dawn.

Anyway, MIL daily food preparation started with a live chicken and a sharp knife, and following my comment, I never heard rooster again.

spugzbunny · 26/12/2017 11:08

For OP and anyone who finds ear plugs uncomfortable; try the ones marketed to women. It's not just a 'women like pink' issue, they are smaller and narrower and therefore fit a smaller ear. I can't wear anything else.

LilaGrace · 26/12/2017 12:02

Akindofmagic- I've heard hat keeping them in at night keeps them quiet. That's not happening here sadly. Thanks for the earplug advice- I e tried many pairs and haven't got it right so far.

Peoples dogs are always barking around mine all hours of the night! I would recommend the gel earplugs, they work for me when my neighbours dogs being a nob 😂
