To ask you to look at the mental health board

... because MN shunt any posts there if someone is struggling, and it's soul breaking tumbleweed. Like we're not fully human, need to be sectioned off away from the normal people. I'm sure that's not the intent but it's a great way to isolate posters who need support.

Thanks for this- I suffer with mh issues but I'm controlled at the moment. It has made me open the link and hopefully I'll be able to provide support over there. Great thread op, truly in the spirit of Christmas

I don't go there much, despite having loads and loads of longterm MH issues. I just find it too much and too upsetting, and don't feel I'm really any good at helping others, sadly...

I'd recommend Elefriends (a community website run by Mind) for anyone wanting to connect with other people with mental health issues, though.

BabsCabsIsLocal · 25/12/2017 22:28

Some good points here. I've a feeling I'm annoyed at MN when they are merely reflecting the wider world...

... but I do like the way stuff (in general) is debated here. Other forums that are specifically for mental health seem different... An MN outspoken, fairly feminist, fairly anti medical model mental health forum would be amazing!

I so agree with this. So odd that these issues aren't really discussed on MN. I reckon it may be because a lot of MNers work in health/caring professions and wouldn't see the other side of the issue.

I am sad that people aren't getting support. Personally I have been over supportive towards people with MH issues in RL, and struggled with depression myself. There comes a point where you have to protect yourself from being drained, put on your oxygen mask and apply self love or you will be joining the others on that board.

I don't bother as threads are deleted.
I feel so sorry for the people reaching out Sad

I find a lot of the smaller forums are too underused to be any use. I don’t think it’s at all specific to mental health.
It’s also really tough. I’ve had mental health problems/ been suicidal. But I can find those threads very triggering. I might even try and post a reply and then end up feeling in a bit of a state.

But agree it is a good idea to have a discussion about how we best support people on here.

JammyGem · 01/01/2018 18:16

Thank you for posting this. I didn't even realise there was a mental health board. I'm in a crisis at the moment so have just posted, and it's good to know where to go to get and give support.

Glad you saw this Jammy.

I feel it’s a safer place. Mumsnet can be incredibly supportive but when the vipers come out they are scary.
