Happy Christmas to you all...I hope you have a wonderful day.

Now for my AIBU.

AIBU to think that multiple mousetraps, sealing "entrance points" and making sure all food sources are sealed (ie, pasta in sealed tubs and so forth) should have got rid of mice?

That if I've done all those things then I shouldn't still have the creepy little buggers!?

For background I live in Australia in a pre war house which is, to put it nicely, a bit of a shack.

It's got bare floorboards and gaps all over the place. It's just OLD and neglected.

No cash to do it up and we love it here..I just can't beat the mice!

It's rural and they just come in from outside all the time....I think they've grown wise to the traps now.

.I've told DH we need a cat....he's Hmm about this but I think a cat will sort the issue as they're just constantly coming in from outside.

AIBU? I bloody love cats anyway.

Yes to a cat! But choose carefully; we had a mouse once and the cat regarded it and then went back to bed. useless!

ididyeah · 25/12/2017 15:15

Ooh! Maybe RhiannonOHara is right, got no more mice now after all...

Turquoisetamborine · 25/12/2017 16:45

I know a pest controller and he told me terriers are better mouser and rat catchers than cats. You have to be a dog person though.

I’ve had a few cats and the females tended to be better mousers. We got mice in our old house until we came down one morning and the kitchen was a massacre of six dead mice and old 18yr old Chloe looking proudly on. No problem after that

dinosaurcookie · 25/12/2017 17:33

We had mice until the cats moved in...not seen a whisker since even though the cats are now elderly and rubbish mousers.

HiggeldyPigsinblankets · 25/12/2017 17:36

I lived by a river and had mice, it was a nightmare as I am terrified of them, there was a cat I used to feed it was the neighbours, I let him in one night after one in my kitchen, for a few days got up to corpses in the morning but didnt see any more inside after that. I heard that the smell of a cat puts mice off

VimFuego101 · 25/12/2017 17:41

Our 4 cats did absolutely sod all to catch any mice. It was only when we started feeding a feral cat cat that was hanging around outside that the problem finally solved itself. Are you sure you've filled in all the holes?

PodgeBod · 25/12/2017 17:45

Well I recently got a cat and all it's done is deposit mice outside the front door and give the house fleas

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/12/2017 17:46

Cats are brilliant so fill your boots.

twilightcafe · 25/12/2017 17:54

Get a Bengal cat. You'll never have a problem with mice moving in again.

Littlepond · 25/12/2017 18:02

So many good reasons to get a cat but yes, we've been mouse-free since we got ours Smile

TheBeastInMsRooneysRoom · 25/12/2017 18:11

Our two kitties solved a mouse problem and they do t hunt or catch. They just repel. They’re indoor only though. If they were in and out they would just bring them in as gifts.

MyBumpIsOnlyPudding · 25/12/2017 18:17

I love my cats to bits, but we used to have mice in our old house and we used to put our cat next to the mice whenever we saw them and she still wasn't bothered Grin we had hoped it would inspire her to catch them/ scare them away but they coexisted quite peacefully unfortunately

AfterSchoolWorry · 25/12/2017 18:19

Should mumsnet mice not be called maice ? Grin

Clandestino · 25/12/2017 19:29

The best cats are ex strays. The indoor ones haven't learned how to hunt properly, neither have those brought up by humans.
My big tom is an ex-stray and he taught the other one to hunt. Tries with me too but I refuse to eat whatever he teaches me to catch to his utter disappointment. Usually I just release them back outside advising them not to consider returning. They always comply.
