Pissed off at/annoyed at/angry at....

I read this on all the thread titles and I’ve started questioning myself.

Surely it’s ‘I’m pissed off with DH.’

‘I’m annoyed with DM...’ etc etc

Is it a regional thing?

Probably!

Kids now saying 'can I GET?' Rather than can I have?

EggysMom · 24/12/2017 20:19

I'm angry WITH DH because he's a wazzock (generalised description).

I'm angry at DH for not buying me a Bugatti Veyron for Christmas (specific thing he did wrong).

Or at least, that's my version of the difference.

ButchyRestingFace · 24/12/2017 20:44

I would tend to say

“I’m pissed off WITH Bob”

“I’m pissed off AT the situation”

And where I’m from, “Can I GET” is the default, I’d say.

TheSnowballFairy · 24/12/2017 21:18

Christ, I thought this was going to be yet another first world Christmas problem.

Thank fuck it isn't Xmas Grin

Animalfarmfan · 24/12/2017 22:02

I agree op.

Animalfarmfan · 24/12/2017 22:02

I agree op.

JustVent · 24/12/2017 22:43

Eggymum what you have written is no different. All you’ve done is add more detail to the second version. You’re still pissed off with him.

OP posts:
JustVent · 24/12/2017 22:44

butchy again, you would be pissed off with the situation, surely?

OP posts:
JustVent · 24/12/2017 22:45

You can shout at somebody.
You can’t be cross at somebody. It makes no sense.

You can throw something at someone.
You can be annoyed at them though. You’re annoyed with them.

OP posts:
JustVent · 24/12/2017 22:45

*cant be annoyed at

JustVent · 25/12/2017 07:45

Bump.

Someone who is good at English please can you tell me?

OP posts:
ButchyRestingFace · 25/12/2017 09:38

butchy again, you would be pissed off with the situation, surely?

I would say “at”. I don’t think “with the situation” would be my first go to.

Might be regional.

Where I’m from, we don’t say “aren’t I?” either. Grin

ButchyRestingFace · 25/12/2017 09:39

I think you might be struggling to get a definitive answer to the question on Christmas day, OP!

JustVent · 25/12/2017 09:55

Good point Butchy!!

What region are you from? I’m South East coast.
And if you don’t say aren’t I, what do you say?

So if you wanted to say “I’m right aren’t I?’ What would you say instead?

Merry Christmas by the way!!

OP posts:
ButchyRestingFace · 25/12/2017 11:24

Merry Christmas! 🎄

I’m from the central belt, in Scotland.

We would say “I’m right, amn’t I?”

Coastalcommand · 25/12/2017 11:48

Can we also dial down on the use of 'pissed' without 'off' to mean angry. If you're pissed at all with somebody, you're drunk. Not angry. At least not unless you're in America.

Originalfoogirl · 25/12/2017 11:52

Rather than can I have?
Or can I have rather than may I have.

I’m from the central belt, in Scotland. We would say “I’m right, amn’t I?”
I’m there too. I hate this!

topcat2014 · 25/12/2017 11:54

"Can I get" makes me say "You are not American.."

lynmilne65 · 25/12/2017 12:04

yes, who wants to watch starving children whilst stuffing your ugly face?

lynmilne65 · 25/12/2017 12:05

am I not

ButchyRestingFace · 25/12/2017 12:10

yes, who wants to watch starving children whilst stuffing your ugly face?

You on the right thread, hen?

ChelleDawg2020 · 25/12/2017 12:29

With a person.

At a thing.

If you are "pissed off at Bob" then you are not thinking of him as a person, you are thinking of him as an object or a problem.

JustVent · 25/12/2017 13:50

Thank you Chelle!

Costalcommand every man and his dog says ‘pissed off’, for many many years. I doubt it will change soon, definitely not via a Mumsnet thread. Wink

Mxyzptlk · 25/12/2017 13:55

Coastalcommand said pissed ≠ angry
Pissed off = angry
Pissed = drunk.
