To thing my Step-mum should be more flexible about this?

Spending xmas eve with my dad and it’s the only day I’m seeing him over the festive period. Step-Mum is adamant presents can’t be opened before xmas day, so we aren’t opening each other’s gifts in front of each other and we will be taking ours back and opening them tomorrow alone.

I’d quite like to see my dad open his present from me but that doesn’t seem to be allowed. I don’t really understand why me step-Mum is being so rigid about this. Aibu?

Ask your dad to walk you out to your car to 'check a funny light on the dash'. Then open your presents.

He can go back in with his gift and think of an excuse for her.

Wait it out until midnight, then pounce....

Open yours and thank him.

"It's not really about you. Dad and I are adults who make our own decisions. "

I don't think it's necessary to be rude to her.

One of the adults seems to want to go along with it.

AAAhhhhh great news Xmas Grin

Is it a generation thing. My first xmas away from my parents (age 28) they were equally adamant about not opening before.
It was utterly miserable not watching them open theirs. I don't think they'd thought it through - it was just a xmas "rule".
It never happened again! They must have been equally miserable.
So i wouldn't be too hard on her - i am glad you got to open them though.

What is this obsession with seeing people open your gifts? Our girl once waited 3 months for a birthday present because her uncles wanted to see her open it and never bothered their arses to come sooner.

Surely a gift is special whether you see it opened or not?

Batmanwearspants · 24/12/2017 19:43

It wasn’t just about seeing my dad open it. Today is my Christmas with my dad so it would have felt weird leaving and driving two hours with a load of wrapped gifts for myself in the boot.
