Is it all up to me?

In general, unless I know someone really well I struggle to make conversation beyond the usual 'hows work' etc.
I'm at the in-laws, who are not great conversationalsts either and so it's pretty dried up already! I've 3 more days of this to go. Typically we resort to watching the kids and comenting on what they are doing, 'great Lego Jeff!'
It's totally tedious.
How can we improve the dry cono. I feel it's all on me to get the convo going but its hard work and i struggle.
Or do I think fuck it and disappear to my room with my kindle?

Ask them if they’ve enjoyed any good books, recommendations for your next read? Any good tv shows, films?
Ask them what their Christmases were like - any peculiar traditions/memorable moments? What was DP like as a kid?
Does DC get their construction techniques from their side of the family?

Alcohol.

Why not all go for a walk and let them show you their neighbourhood, ask them about their favourite places, where would they like to go on their next holiday?
Play a board game, something that would typically foster conversation or at least it’s a combined activity to talk about next time.
What would they do/where would they travel if they win the lottery?
Ask them stuff that sounds as though they want their advice - people love giving advice
no, the irony of that last statement is not lost on me

Could you read your Kindle or book while you’re there with them, to be more friendly than going to your room, or would they take offence? Are there some good festive films on that you could choose together and then watch as a family or would that be tricky with the kids? Does your DH talk to them much?

Don't the family have any board games that you all could play? That's always fun!

ferntwist · 24/12/2017 11:04

Board game is a great idea as PP suggests!

Thanks all for the tips, I used them all and have to say it's way more enjoyable! Thank you and happy Christmas!
