WWYD - baby cough/cold

DD 4months has a very bad cold and cough, it's really upsetting as she's clearly very distressed and uncomfortable by it. Christmas day we're due to be going to PIL's where there will be 8 people who've all travelled from all over the country.
Should I still go? Or am I being silly?
Sorry if I'm being overly precious, I just don't want to risk her being exposed to any more viruses when her immune system is down. I'm the one up all night with her whilst she can't breathe properly.
She also threw up all over the bed last night, I think it was a load of phlegm she's been swallowing.
Also - how long do you leave a cough/cold before going to the Dr with a 4 month old?

Go. It's horrible when they have a cold but it's just that, a cold. Some babies/children have a cold permanently. Nurseries are often just one mass of green candles.
I personally wouldn't take mine to the dr with a cold unless I had reason to believe it had turned into a chest infection and they had a fever.
Get some of that saline nasal spray, allow baby to sleep elevated as much as possible in car seat/on you/in swing etc during the day, sit with them in a steamy room and make sure they are getting plenty of fluids. That's about as much as you can do but don't skip Xmas day for a cold.

I'd still go she will be fine.... my little one was the same for about 8 months.... his hit his chest every time and turned into a chest infection.... apparently on average they get about 8-10 colds in their first year.... it's horrible but just keep her upright... put the head end of her crib on some books... put some Vicks on a Muslin over the side of her cot and just keep her hydrated.... honestly if you don't visit people every time she gets a cold you will never leave the house! I also have a 4 month old dc3 with a cold and a cough, caught it from his sisters who are all up coughing all night. Just they way with kids this time of year I’m afraid. I’d still go, if it was just a random day maybe not but it’s Christmas!
We’re not taking ds to the church service though and just going with the flow at night, all you can do. A humidifier in room helps a bit at night.
As for the doctors I’m not planning on going unless it really sounded chesty and he was struggling to feed/sleep at all. Not much they can do and as long as you have wet nappies etc and ok enough they just have to ride it out. There will be plenty more colds to come!

Also, 4 months is a really awkward time sleep wise with a growth spurt and sleep regression, plus reflux is apparently at its worse so you might find you’d have dodgy sleep anyway!

Go and use the Vicks on the feet method (if they can have Vicks that young) or potato in the sock. Works a treat!

I'd go, she is more likely to make them ill than the other way around. My LO got a cold at 2 weeks old, which lasted a long time. She is nearly 8 months now and if we didn't do anything when she was ill we would never go out.

I hope your LO feels better soon. (Btw with a cold I found the calpol plug in was amazing for helping them at night.)

RadioGaGoo · 24/12/2017 09:07

Humidifier, Calpol Plug In, Snufflebabe, go.

RadioGaGoo · 24/12/2017 09:10

And wedge! My LO seemed to have a permanent cold from 4 months to today (he has one now at eight months). I waited a week before I saw the Dr when it first happened. Have never been since.

The bog standard Vicks isn't recommended for under 2s as it can actually cause further respiratory distress.

I would just go. DD has a permanent cold at the moment, life has to go on.
