To go to Tesco in the morning?

I had planned to get the bus down to the Co Op to get fresh cream and soft drinks and a couple of other bits that were missed off the shopping. But I procrastinated and now it’s dark and cold. DH has had a drink so can’t drive me.

I’ve decided I could just sack it off and go to the big Tesco tomorrow. Is this madness? Will it be heaving or will they just not have anything I need?

It may be a stupid q but I’ve literally never shopped Christmas Eve.

Do I need to just woman up and walk down to the shops now?

I went to Tesco at 11am today. Car park was absolutely rammed and the shop was very busy but there was lots of staff and every till was open so I didn't have to queue and it wasn't as bad as I expected

Starlight2345 · 23/12/2017 16:56

I would say don’t go first thing go about lunch time much easier

OddestSock · 23/12/2017 16:56

I think they usually give out chocolates at the entrance on Christmas Eve.
I’d wait until tomorrow for that ;)

trinity0097 · 23/12/2017 16:57

With the timings of Xmas this year I can’t imagine it will be that bad tomorrow from about lunchtime onwards!

I am off to pick up my turkey at the graveyard 8.30pm tonight slot for. m&S

Tipsntoes · 23/12/2017 16:57

I think if you just want a couple of bits, you know where to head for and can use the self service tills it will be fine.

Although I would be inclined to got last thing, when it will be deserted and the cream might be reduced but it depends if you can "manage" without cream.

WorraLiberty · 23/12/2017 16:57

Check when they're allowed to start selling as tomorrow is Sunday.

I believe it's 11am?

AnachronisticCorpse · 23/12/2017 16:57

Sounds promising.

I’m sort of hoping that most people won’t be food shopping on CE so it might not be too hideous. And actually, if they don’t have what we need we could go elsewhere.

Ah fuck it, I’ll stay in my pjs this evening and go tomorrow.

I went to Tesco today and it was like any other Saturday morning- busy but not rammed.

AnachronisticCorpse · 23/12/2017 16:59

It opens at 10 I think but I’ll check.

Cream is essential for the bread sauce apparently. Oh and for the Christmas puds.

Shopping today was busy but not chaotic, no long lines, no shortage of parking spaces and nothing had been run out of. Do it as soon as you're able in the morning and then have a nice lunch to celebrate doing it Grin

WorraLiberty · 23/12/2017 17:01

My local Asda opens at 10am 'for browsing', but they can't open the tills until 11am.

Apparently they're only allowed to trade for 6 consecutive hours, so some choose 10am - 4pm and some choose 11am - 5pm.

So yes, probably best to check.

otherdoor · 23/12/2017 17:03

I used to work in a supermarket and Christmas Eve was always weirdly quiet. You might find a few things are out of stock though!

PickAChew · 23/12/2017 17:04

We're going nowhere more adventurous than the Sainsbury's local, tomorrow, for last minute cream, milk and bread. If they don't have it, there's a coop across the road.

PavlovianLunge · 23/12/2017 17:05

Most supermarkets open half an hour early, so you get started, but you can’t pay before the ‘official’ opening time.

AnachronisticCorpse · 23/12/2017 17:06

I’m pretty confident I can get what we need either there or the Co Op or failing that there’s Sainsburys. It will aaaaaallll be fine.

Timeforachange68 · 23/12/2017 17:20

The Tesco I've been in today is open at 9 tomorrow for browsing so I assume that means you can fill your trolley & be at the tills by 10 then they officially open?

brizzledrizzle · 23/12/2017 17:20

Whatever you haven't already got is probably not essential if I say it often enough I will believe it

AnachronisticCorpse · 23/12/2017 17:23

Well we started on the booze already so definitely need to replenish that, and the kids might actually literally die if they don’t have fizzy drinks on Christmas Day. And cream and milk and DH has just reminded me we have no gherkins or pickled onions. Disaster!

If you are going to go, go early - as in as soon as they open early.

I went this morning to local equivalent which opened at 8am. I was there a 9am and it was very busy but copable (only a few parking places but got one without having to wait). I left at about 10am by which time the whole place was mayhem. Long lines of cars trying to get into the car park - having to wait for people to leave - and cars driving round waiting for cars to go.

TrinityBelle · 23/12/2017 17:27

Timeforachange yes it does. My local Asda does this every Sunday.

brizzledrizzle · 23/12/2017 17:27

I've got some gherkins

MayhemandMadness01 · 23/12/2017 17:31

Our local tesco opens at 9.30am on sunday for browsing, tills open at 10am so you cant checkout till then but if you are only after a few things then you might get first in checkout

SlothMama · 23/12/2017 17:34

I used to work in a supermarket and it was always quiet on Christmas Eve

Jux · 23/12/2017 17:46

It'll be fine. Like a Saturday on a long weekend. You'll cope. Sit down and have a bevy with dh.

Unhomme · 23/12/2017 18:11

I always grab a cut price turkey from 2pm on Christmas eve...It's normally relatively quiet compared to 22/23 Dec.
