re. Chickenpox exposure

15 month old has has snotty nose and cough for about 5 days. Today a slightly raised temp, but still under 38. He is pretty well in himself. Chickenpox is going round at his nursery.

Yesterday I spotted a couple of vague tiny red patches on his chest and back which disappeared by the evening.

Today the same.

I have cancelled a meetup with a friend and her 2 month adjusted preemie, but what should I do about the family lunch at 4pm today? And about tomorrow, and Christmas day?

My sister is 9 months pregnant. Google says if she has had chickenpox she and the baby would not be at risk. If she hasn't had them then and she has the baby within 5 days then she would be at risk of passing to the a newborn (very serious). Our mum is sure she's had chicken pox.

Under normal circumstances I'd obviously just sack the lunch off today, but my dad's brother, his wife, and nieces/nephews are all coming up from down south, and my dad has Dementia which is progressing quite rapidly. There might not be another opportunity for a lunch like this.

If it's clearly chickenpox I'll just cancel everything, but it isn't. How fast can you tell that it's pox? What would tell me that this definitely is/isn't chickenpox?

I’ve had to put an appointment on for my 8 year old, he’s had chicken pox 3 times however has come out in a vile rash in multiple body parts, I am thinking it’s shingles, which is far worse than CP, I’d personally keep at home.

Ds has a compromised immune system and currently we are worried sick about him, until a diagnosis, he will be kept in the house, you need to think of others who can’t fight infections/virus.

Horrible time to get them and I feel for you Flowers

Oh god HaudYerWheesht that does look nasty.

Sending lots of antivaricellavibes to your DS and hope he feels well enough to have a nice Christmas.

Yes - I would never take him out with confirmed Chickenpox. He was very ill himself with sepsis when he was little and we spent a lot of time in hospital and the experience is never far from my mind. I was more wondering if I was overreacting to miss this lunch (which might not be able to happen again) when I'm not sure if it's even chickenpox. Anyway, the decision is made.

Pure lovin yer username by the way.

Noodel - hope your wee one is well enough to enjoy Christmas too!!

DS is just getting over CP -
He also has eczema and I’ve had several times where I’ve thought ‘Is it isn’t it’ however this time there really was no mistaking it - he went from no spots to spots within hours and they were literally popping up in front of me!

These were day 1

Day 2!

It sounds like it could be chicken pox to me, that's how my best friend's two dc started, the doctor confirmed it as the start of chicken pox. The blisters came out fully two days later.

I'd text your sister and tell her you planned to cancel because you suspect your son has chicken pox and are worried about spreading it, especially to her. If she says no worries then I'd go there, If it's at a house obviously not restaurant.

Thanks Lady if it is CP as well, ds's only ease was a sock filled with porridge oats which you run under the hot tap, it produces a natural natural antihisamine.

I'm a teacher, when I was pregnant a few children in my class had chicken pox, doctor said not to worry as I'd had it before and was immune. Shingles wasn't a risk apparently xx

JaneBanks · 23/12/2017 17:10

Didn't mean to put the xx there - a bit nethuns sorry!

Thanks for asking LadylaSnack he is fine in himeself, being a his normal devilish self currently. So far in the past two days has stood in the trifle and pulled my christmas cake off the side...... kind of wishing he was feeling a little more poorly!

We have been lucky looking at these pictures - both seem to have had it quite mildly.
