To think I should be entitled to some discount

user1490465531 · 23/12/2017 10:57

Just wanted to see if anyone else has experience of this.
I work 16 hrs a week minimum wage job and have to pay full council tax.
AIBU to think I should be entitled to some discount and is anyone else in a simular situation.
Posting on this board for traffic.
The only thing I qualify for is the single person discount.

you have a discount

why do you think you should get another?

Angrybird345 · 23/12/2017 10:59

Is there a reason you don’t work more hours or have a full time job?

dementedpixie · 23/12/2017 10:59

Have you looked into 'council tax reduction'. You may or may not qualify

WillowWept · 23/12/2017 11:00

How much discount do you think you should receive

user1490465531 · 23/12/2017 11:01

Please only relevant comments otherwise please don't post.
I'm asking as I'm on a low income and thought I mIght qualify for some council tax support.

I'm a lone parent and when I worked more hours I was worse of.
Don't blame me blame this crazy government.

Unicornfluffycloudsandrainbows · 23/12/2017 11:03

Why post then op people are asking questions to offer solutions

Sirzy · 23/12/2017 11:03

Please only relevant comments otherwise please don't post.

You can’t dictate what people post and tbf it was a relevant question.

You already get a discount though so I think that’s fair enough!

TripleASays · 23/12/2017 11:03

Have you applied for council tax reduction? You can find the application form on your local council website. They will let you know whether or not you qualify and reduce your bill if you do.

user1490465531 · 23/12/2017 11:07

Have asked but they say its right yet others I know in simular situation are paying half of what I pay.
And they are in the same property banding.

Reduction based on your income is a benefit that you have to claim for. You can do this online and need to provide wage slips etc. It’s not actually called Council tax benefit anymore it is called Council tax reduction. Go on your local councils website and apply. It’s usually applied for at the Same time as Housing benefit, if you’re entitled to HB you’ll probably be entitled to CTR

PaperdollCartoon · 23/12/2017 11:09

Ask again. Are you in receipt of any benefits now that you weren’t when you asked before perhaps?

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 23/12/2017 11:12

You get discount Hmm

WitchesHatRim · 23/12/2017 11:14

Please only relevant comments otherwise please don't post.

You can't dictate as to who does and doesn't post.

You are already getting a 25% discount!

Lostwithinthehills · 23/12/2017 11:15

I work 16 hrs a week minimum wage job
I think you were being disingenuous here as you may only work 16 hours a week but this isn’t the only source of income for you...
when I worked more hours I was worse of
You may find that your total income is similar to that of someone who works 40 hours a week who will not get any extra discounts either.

VimFuego101 · 23/12/2017 11:15

I don't think you quite understand how a forum works Grin

Branleuse · 23/12/2017 11:16

it is shit for people in your position. Youd probably be better off not working, but thats another precarious unsustainable situation too.

Basically youre a working class singleparent. Prepare to be in poverty till you die mate.

Viviennemary · 23/12/2017 11:16

Different local authorities have different rules. Presumably you are already getting the 25% single person's discount. Do you have savings. That may affect your entitlement to a reduction. And are you claiming any working tax credits. Don't get annoyed at posters. They're not the ones who make the rules.

MyDcAreMarvel · 23/12/2017 11:17

Do you have dc?

ilovewelshrarebit123 · 23/12/2017 11:18

Have you applied for Council tax reduction in addition to your single persons discount though?

You have to apply for it, I did and got £20 off my yearly bill. Not huge but better off than on.

I work 30 hours, minimum wage do maybe you don't qualify?

MoreCheerfulMonica · 23/12/2017 11:20

Check out your entitlement to other benefits, but council tax is based on the value of the property - not the income of the people living in it - and you're already getting the single occupier discount.

user1490465531 · 23/12/2017 11:20

Was hoping someone might come on here in a simular situation but obviously not.
Will just accept that I need to pay full amount.
Sadly I'm not a mumsnetter with a 50k earning husband but as I dare to only work 16 hrs guess I have to bow my head down in shame for even asking.
But thanks to the helpful comments and no need for anyone to post further.

Council tax reduction is based on income so fill in the form to apply for it

MyDcAreMarvel · 23/12/2017 11:22

It depends do you have a health condition?
