To find Boxing Day Shopping a Bit Sad?

Just that really!

I remember growing up, EVERYWHERE shut over the Christmas period. The roads were dead. It was very peaceful.

Now, it seems that the January sales have become the 'Boxing Day Sales'! I was chatting to some of my mum's friends and they were planning on going out shopping on Boxing Day!?! How can anyone be bothered?

Thanks to all the shoppers, most workers don't even have a choice about working that day, and are not paid any extra. I would hate to work in retail.

I don't even know what bargain people are talking about, as above, there are constant sales, special offers going on. You can find cheaper items at better times. It's a bit like black Friday, shoppers believe they are doing incredibly well, but it's not really true is it.

TheHolidayArmadillo · 22/12/2017 22:42

my dsis usd to hav work boxing day said it was lik a zoo

Yep. In the shop I worked in we'd take an average week's takings in one day on Boxing Day (and slightly less on the 27th).

RaindropsAndSparkles · 22/12/2017 22:44

For the last four years I've bought three huge turkeys for less than £4 each for the freezer. Have fed 80 homeless people in Feb.

Also get lots of delicacies for less than half price for 27th/ 28th That we wouldn't eat until then anyway. And next year's Christmas puds, crackers, etc Grin

cathyclown · 22/12/2017 22:44

I have to say that although I disagree with Boxing Day sales and the stress it puts on retail workers, it is an outlet for those stuck at home with people they might despise.

You get the picture from many threads here about being cooped up with those they would not bid the time of day to in RL. ESCAPE!

So, sadly for some getting out with the the excuse of shopping is good.

I still fkn hate it. Too much consumerism for sure.

Fffion · 22/12/2017 22:46

I remember sales starting in January, eg 5th Jan.

Willow2017 · 22/12/2017 22:47

I cant imagine anything worse to do on boxing day.
Why on earth people can't go a couple of days without shopping is beyond me. Give shop assistants a bloody break and shut your shops retailers. The same people who would shop on boxing day will shop later in the week.

Its totally ridiculous to be open boxing day.

I have bought extra stuff on run up to xmas so i dont need to go near a shop for days😀
Its xmas, time to slob out and enjoy family and doing nothing.
Who the freak actually wants to go shopping.

All the 'sale' stuff is crap they cant get rid of throughout the year anyway. Its not worth the hassle.

RestingGrinchFace · 22/12/2017 22:49

It was the same when I was growing up. As the only child of an unhappy marriage the days when everything was closed and there was no option but to stay at home were pretty sad.

brizzledrizzle · 22/12/2017 22:50

Boxing Day is for either family walks or horse riding (NOT hunting before I get flamed) - a good hack to clear the cobwebs is just the ticket.

Samcro · 22/12/2017 22:50

yanbu
but then im biased as ds will have to work and I wish he didn't

tigercub50 · 22/12/2017 22:52

I have never worked at Christmas before but have to go in on Boxing Day. Unfortunately it’s 12 til 4 ( would much rather start earlier & have some of the day left). I work at The Range & they only ever close on Christmas Day & Easter Sunday. All about money money money 😞

Violletta · 22/12/2017 23:04

Boxing Day is for either family walks or horse riding so what if i hate family walks and horse riding?

or dont have access to a horse?

Justanotherlurker · 22/12/2017 23:05

Isn't this just another form of "in the good old days"?

Everyone now benefits from a pretty much 24/y economy, so where do you draw the line?

Justanotherlurker · 22/12/2017 23:07

24/7 economy ... that should have been

glitterlips1 · 22/12/2017 23:08

I don't bother to shop on Boxing day, I have been doing it all of December and just want to chill out and watch movies in my cosy house. I never find the sales are that great and not enough for me to venture out.

melj1213 · 22/12/2017 23:15

I don't feel like it's a major deal breaker in a retail worker's life...it sucks but it's just another bank holiday they have to work

Sorry but you don't get to speak for all of us and for some of us it is a big deal.

I work in a supermarket and I have to work Boxing Day this year, it was the one day in the entirety of December I asked not to work and I was put in for it anyway. I work in Customer Services and I have worked Boxing Day for the last 3 years because every year there's always some excuse as to why my manager can't get anyone else from the Customer Service team to do the Boxing Day shift even though it is supposed to be shared equally between us all.

It has become my hill to die on - I have agreed to work this year because it was too late to argue by the time I had got my Christmas rota (also DD is with her dad for Christmas this year so it's annoying but since I don't have to find childcare I can suck it up) but I have told them that if I am asked to work Boxing Day next year, I will be handing in my notice and they know I am deadly serious.

Boxing Day in Customer Services is horrendous - last year I stopped counting the amount of times I was shouted at, or told I had ruined someone's Christmas because something they had bought from us had been broken/damaged/inedible/gone off/tasted bad etc after the first couple of hours as I would not have managed to make it to the end of the day if I had.

Also, it's the fact that to be in work early on Boxing Day I don't get to enjoy my Christmas Day to the full as I am constantly conscious of how Christmas Day actions will impact work. If I stay up late then I'll be tired for one of the busiest days of the year; if I get drunk then I'll be hungover which is not worth it when I have to work (and if I drink then I'll need to pay an extortionate amount for a taxi to/from work since public transport doesn't run on Boxing Day and I refuse to risk drink driving) or that I can't just get drunk and end up staying at my parents house because I have to get home in order to get my work stuff ready for the following morning.

willstarttomorrow · 22/12/2017 23:19

I only shop online in PJ's drinking wine generally so I doubt I am the target market. There seem to be sales on 99.7% of the year so hard to get excited about boxing day. What I have never understood is people who line up bloody early on boxing day for the Next sale. It is Next for god's sake! I think it was cool for about 15 mins in 1992 and is not exactly expensive (or nice/good quality) outside the sale. I miss the boredom of Sundays now. It is busier than the rest of the week.

BornToSucceed · 22/12/2017 23:24

not being goady, but have worked Boxing Day for the last 3 years surely if it was that big a deal you would think about getting a job somewhere else?
I dont want to work in London for example, but if it was the only job i would take it, and spend time looking for a job closer to home?
once, maybe twice, but 3 times?

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/12/2017 23:29

Shops being open on Boxing Day is unnecessary.

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/12/2017 23:30

BorntoSucceed - not everyone has plentiful alternative job opportunities, due to education, personal circumstance or both. “not goady” Indeed Hmm

Summerisdone · 22/12/2017 23:33

It honestly doesn’t bother me that the shops are open Boxing Day. Some years I go, others I don’t. I won’t be doing them this year as I’m working 9am-11pm

I don’t pity the retail staff either, it’s worse for staff working in restaurants and pubs as they’re open Christmas Day too, and many of them have to work extra long hours over the Christmas period.

Also many carers and emergency services are working right through, but I always consider them differently as they are needed whereas shops, pubs and restaurants don’t really NEED to be open.

madein1995 · 22/12/2017 23:33

I agree. I'm off boxing day this year - off 5 days actually and I'm ecstatic. Other sods aren't so lucky. Why should peoples lovely relaxing Christmas be spoilt by bloody customers who have nothing better to do than shop? It's a sign of our consumerist society that shops will be open on boxing day - shops are stupid not to. But everyone who goes shopping on boxing day know the smiles and grins are fake we are good actors and that really cashiers are hoping you'd fuck the fuck off so the managers might send them home early, know you're an inconvenience to the shop staff, though they won't show it they will be thinking (none of my team are remotely happy to work boxing day). Im just lucky my core days are Fri and sat and though I work overtime, I was able to put no next to my name for Moet of Xmas week, and did this in July

iammeegan · 22/12/2017 23:34

I know people that do it and love it but it's not for me.
I worked in retail, was told if I didn't work Boxing Day I would loose my job and no one was aloud a break and in return they would supply a free buffet (one cold pizza and two packs of sausage rolls for 15+ staff) and we would be allocated a 10 minute slot to grab food.
I worked 10 hours that day and was only seventeen. When I piped up about it being illegal they threatened to drop my contracted hours as 'I obviously couldn't deal with the work'

stickytoffeevodka · 22/12/2017 23:35

The only day our shop closes is Christmas Day - and that's over the entire year - we even open Easter Sunday.

I'm working Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, NYE and NYD this year but I don't mind it too much. Yes, I'd rather be at home but we get double time for bank holidays so working both does add up.

It is stupidly busy though and customers are always saying "aww I feel sorry for you having to work" - fuck off, I have to be here because you insist on needing to save 10% on a shirt a 9am in the morning!

Samcro · 22/12/2017 23:38

maybe schools should open on boxing day too.

Fanciedachange17 · 22/12/2017 23:41

YANBU. Why is the shopping frenzy such a sport? Ridiculous. We have far too much stuff yet rush out to get more and get into debt for it.
Count me out.
