I hate that word. Sorry.

We now don’t have either recycling or rubbish collection until Jan 5 and I am stressing. Tips to reduce the waste?

Also can I make pigs in blankets and sausage meat stuffing balls in advance and freeze? Raw or cooked?

Please add any wisdom.

I think most everybody will need to do runs to the local tip to get rid of rubbish with how small the bins are now.

We've done 2 runs already to empty all the bins ready for all the paper wrapping etc.

Sorry no idea about freezing.

isseywithcats · 22/12/2017 20:52

dont know about how to reduce your waste more than you usually but yes stuffing balls and pigs in blankets can be frozen and thawed raw cooking them will kill any bacteria

Allthetuppences · 22/12/2017 20:56

Tip runs. Don't bother with a traditional Christmas dinner. Remove all packaging before wrapping children's gifts. Buy with waste reduction in mind.

Fruit/Vegetable waste to compost.
Recycle card, paper, glass, many plastics.

Don't live in UK but got a lovely message from the bin gang tonight. Extra recycling will be collected after Christmas alongside the full Green Bin if it is in a clear plastic bag. No limits.

Need to find clear plastic bag pronto!

If u haven't wrapped already do a few un gift bags and pop them away for next year. Most seal with only a tiny bit of tape that can be easily cut.
Don't bother with ribbons and bows they add to waste.
Don't over buy veg and stuff just cook enough.

cathyclown · 22/12/2017 21:19

Raver84.

As far as possible we use gift bags. We then all use them again! Reduce, Re-use, recycle!

Santa sacks for the big items. They are flimsy and can go in the recyle bin.

Less is more!

Our bins are as normal just a day late so i'm pleased!! You can make and freeze pigs and stuffing. Par boil your roasties before hand and just cook on the day too, lisa faulkner and john torode recommended that on this morning today! Heres an article that helps.. sorry its the daily fail but great tips www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2527095/Have-chilled-Christmas-The-Freeze-Queen-takes-stress-festive-cooking-tips.html

We don't do multiple veg options here. One day to be BAAaad.

Just throw frozen root veg from Aldi into the oven, lots of it, gorgeous.

In my experience the only things that are really scoffed are the roasties. Veg be damned on the day!

I know I will get lots of replies saying the opposite. But I still think as long as there are roasties and nice gravy everyone will love it.

Veggies and vegans can eat roasties too as long as there is no animal products used in the roasting. Same with the roasted root veg.

Sorted.

My Christmas hack is to stay at home. Everyone is welcome to visit but we are going nowhere in the Christmas period. Saves no end of stress.

I always cook loads of Christmas dinner, plus a Christmas ham. We have plenty of cheese and salad and nice desserts in. Basically we just forage in the fridge and live off the leftovers for a couple of days after Christmas.

cathyclown · 22/12/2017 22:29

I cannot understand the amount of food that is prepared for Christmas Day, the plates must be the size of tractor wheels or something.

How do you get it into you. And then dessert, OMG.

Just me obv, but I prefer grazing which isn't great either, but keeps me from being a blimp!

Anyway best wishes for the day. For that is all it is, possibly 18 hours max.

Rossigigi · 23/12/2017 00:38

We are allowed to put out 2 x extra bags out with our normal bin.

Tip- buy the huge garden or wheelie bin bags rather than normal black or white in bags.

Open fire. All sorts of stuff can be burned, including bones, bread crusts etc. Stale snacks like Doritos or whotsits make excellent firelighters!
