Used our money to send that tw*t to Hong Kong?!

So I'm watching CBeebies this morning with the kids (don't judge - I have a headache and need quiet for half an hour!) and that annoying tw*t Mister Maker is on.

He's in Hong Kong - the actual Hong Kong.
AIBU to be slightly irked that the Beeb spent our licence fee on sending this guy all the way to Hong Kong simply to stick letters onto a piece of paper in a pagoda?!

Years ago I used to work at bbc worldwide on the resale of CBeebies programmes. At the time Tellytubbies was the cult kids programme. It was sold all over the world, sometimes for huge sums (eg BBC America) and sometimes for less (eg ex Soviet Block), but the BBC definitely made a huge profit on it which is then reinvested in programme making. Incidently, the 4 actors in the tellytubby suits shared the 10% actors guild residual payment, so they were all making a fortune from the resales.

If you think that's bad, have you not seen when they send Rory and FERN! to the Galapagos Islands? Pretty sure there's no expat community there Grin

Whinberry · 22/12/2017 10:09

We saw him filming once and he was very nice - spotted us and came over to greet my children and had his photo taken with them. He didn't need to. My son (3 at the time) was in awe.

KitKat1985 · 22/12/2017 10:10

I'm with you OP. Mr Maker seems to go on lots of long-haul trips to make some crap out of paper and card. Complete waste of money.

BadgersBum · 22/12/2017 10:11

To be fair, with the price of public transport around here, it probably costs less to fly Mr MakeUp (as DS calls him) EasyJet to Hong Kong than it does to put Channel 5's Milkshake monkey on that bus round the city.

BinRaidingRaccoon · 22/12/2017 10:29

The Galapagos episode of my Pet and Me was great, though.

DoJo · 22/12/2017 10:35

Also, how is the licence fee 'our money'?

StillTryingHard · 22/12/2017 10:40

Do the BBC actually produce mr maker?

dingdongdigeridoo · 22/12/2017 11:18

All the stuff he makes looks like it’d fall to pieces in seconds. It’s all pritt sticked together.

Also, his projects would cost a bloody fortune. Whole bottles of that kids paint, masses of coloured cardboard, all to make shite.

ItsBeginingToLookAlotLikeChris · 22/12/2017 11:21

I doubt it cost that much to send ab fab to champagne. They stayed in pretty basic places really. It was a fun program.
There is simply kind reason on this earth however we organise the children needed Mr maker to bed sent to Hong Kong

OneOfTheGrundys · 22/12/2017 11:26

Well he was the only celeb to come and play with ds2’s deaf football team! No big deal made, had a lovely kickabout with them and stayed for ages just chatting.

V down to earth and kind. Didn’t bat an eyelid when DS went into meltdown.

—not unattractive irl either!—

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/12/2017 11:52

I used to like the Doodledoo guy, Chris something or other, Rhod Gilbert's mate.

HermioneAndTheSniffle · 22/12/2017 12:20

The only th8ng that is worth remembering is that it won’t be a real jolly in his side. From I used to do a lot of travel for work (that might have included nice locations like that), it meant arriving at the airport, going to hotel and then straight to work. Full day at work, dinner and start again the next day. Back to the plan as soon as work is finished.
No time for visiting or sightseeing. What he will have seen is the airport, the hotel and where ever he did the filming.

It always has been very rare that whatever travel I did allowed for a Weekend break too. I suspect this has been the same for him.

JingsMahBucket · 22/12/2017 12:34

Sorry @MissMudskipper. I missed the lightheartedness. I shall back out of this thread in shame. Grin

HerrHerrHerr · 22/12/2017 14:36

I like Mr Maker, I am happy them to use a proportion of my licence fee to send him away. They can use the rest to continue to fund serious jockin’. Please no one hate me too much

itsgettinghotinhere80 · 22/12/2017 14:43

My friend knows him and says he is lovely. So there.
